Short biography
Andrei Alexandrovich Shpagonov was born in Kazan on September 13, 1969 . He was the eldest child in the family. From April 27, 1987 grew up without a mother.
After school, due to illness, he was released from military service and, after graduating from vocational school , worked for some time at one of Kazan factories. But then he went to work in the Office of Special Communication of Tatarstan by courier .
At work, he proved himself a closed and unsociable loner. He was distinguished by a good possession of a pistol and the ability to shoot straight, for which he had a promotion in the service. However, according to his former colleagues, Shpagonov was distinguished by a penchant for personal gain: he resold vodka, engaged in petty theft.
In early 1991, he was dismissed for inconsistencies with his position. After his dismissal, he worked as a security guard for some time in one of the private furniture stores in Kazan, but was soon dismissed for an unknown reason, or he quit because of a small salary. I tried to organize my own trading business, but nothing happened either.
Preparing for a crime
Some time after the resignation and failures in business, in December 1991, Shpagonov decided on a robbery. For the raid on his former place of work, the Shpagon drew his cousin, Dmitry Kovalev, who at first refused, because he was afraid of the death penalty. Shpagonov managed to convince him that he would kill all the witnesses, and no one could identify them. After that, Kovalev agreed to the proposal of Shpagonov, because he had big debts. According to the plan, the Shpagonov was supposed to kill all the employees in the building and collect the weapons, after which Kovalev was to help his brother escape. Shpagonov explained to an accomplice that a crime would take him about an hour and a half. All preparations for the crime took four months from Shpagonov.
Massacre
After 9 pm on April 26, 1992, the 22-year-old Andrei Shpagonov entered the building of the Office of Special Communications of Tatarstan. Three of his old friends were on duty there - Shmelev, Lepukhin, who watched TV, and Komardin, who was in the duty room. After jointly drinking three bottles of vodka brought by Shpagonov, Komardin went to sleep in the duty room, and his two assistants dispersed in search of a place to rest. The gangways with a gas cartridge and a knife rose after them to the second floor.
Seeing Lepukhina coming to him in the doorway, Shpagon splashed him in the face from a can, and then inflicted several knife wounds to his back and stomach. The murderer dragged the body into the office and headed to the rest room where Shmelev was sleeping. Approaching the bed, he first sprayed the sleeper from the can in the face, and then inflicted one exact knife wound in the heart. Leaving the rest room, the Shpagon almost ran back to the first floor, rushed into the duty room, where Komardin was dozing, and three times struck the attendant, who had time to stand up with a knife in the neck and stomach and took away the service weapon of the dead man.
At this time at the front door bell rang. He let the guides into the building of the arrived courier Nagaitsev, and then shot him in the back of the head when he went to the men's dressing room. Then Shpagonov knocked on the door of the freight forwarders department, where there were four women workers, among whom was Lala Farzeeva, the future witness. The attacker opened fire on them, wounding two women, I. Mardanov and L. Farzeev, and killing one - F. Menzianov. One of the women, A. Shaikhudinova, who was in the next room all this time, tried to escape, and she even managed to leave the building, but she stumbled, and the Shpagon arrived in time and shot the woman. He dragged the corpse into the room and began to pack weapons. Meanwhile, the wounded Lala Farzeeva awoke, she was able to get up and go out into the corridor and wanted to call the police, but the door to the duty officer’s room was locked. Then the woman returned to the vault of the expedition department and closed there from the inside. Having heard the steps, Shpagonov realized that someone was still alive and decided to finish off the witness. He went around the whole department, but found no one. Fearing that the attacker would shoot her, Lyalya wrote “Andrei Shpagonov” in blood on the floor. Meanwhile, the murderer shot the door open and went into the forwarding department where one of the wounded, I. Mardanova, was dying. Having decided that these were her steps, the attacker finished off the woman with a shot to the head and returned to the packing of the weapon.
As soon as the offender was about to go out, the doorbell rang again. Shpagon changed the shop in the gun and went to open. The murderer let the courier Sadriev, who had flown in from Moscow, and the driver Mariev who met him inside the room. Sadriev and the driver went to the lobby and saw the body of Shaikhudinova. The guards immediately shot the bewildered Sadriev and his driver. Then Shpagon again walked around the entire building and shot another clip into dead bodies, but again did not see Lyalya Farzeeva. Making sure that there were no witnesses left, Shpagon put the rags and flammable materials found in the building around the building, poured gasoline over them and set it on fire. Then Shpagonov came out with a bag of weapons to the place where Kovalev was supposed to meet him, but he, frightened, left the place a few minutes earlier and traveled through the nearby streets, intending to drive up later. Shpagon decided that his brother had abandoned him, and returned to the already burning building, having decided to leave on a service truck. The murderer found the keys of the dead driver, put the bag with the weapon in the car and began to get it. The truck did not start, and then frightened Shpagonov, having decided that he had taken the wrong keys, returned to the blazing building. At that time, Kovalyov drove slowly past the Special Communications Department. Seeing a burning building, he was frightened and left the scene of the crime. At that moment, his car was noticed by a witness looking out of the window, who, seeing a fire, went outside. The shpagon walked around the building and collided with it and several other people, but managed to distract them with cries that there were still living people in the building, and he himself allegedly ran for mounting. Shpagon again tried to start the car, but he was frightened by the rescued firefighters. The killer left the crime scene on foot. He threw the gun into the river.
Corollary
At the site of the fire extinguishing, 9 corpses were found and Lyalya Farzeeva, seriously wounded, unconscious. 67 weapons and ammunition were found in a special communications vehicle. It was discovered and the inscription Farzeeva, but because of the consequences of extinguishing the fire to read it was difficult. The letters “d”, “p”, “a”, “o”, “n” and the letter “c”, initially adopted as the number “13”, were more or less clearly visible. All this was decoded as "Dragon 13" or "Thirteenth Dragon", but in the end investigators agreed on the opinion that the inscription could be a first or last name. Later analysis showed that the inscription was made precisely by Farzeeva’s blood. The names of employees, including the former, containing all the letters of the inscription were revealed. The list got and Shpagonov.
Recovering, Farzeeva testified. Shpagonov declared wanted. A survey of the killer's relatives showed that he and Kovalyov were then leaving for Kazan. Kovalev was detained. At first, he gave false testimony, saying that that day he and his brother went to Kazan to have fun, went to the cinema and to the cafe, and then they parted after Shpagonov allegedly went along with some girl. However, Kovalev was exposed: “Zhiguli”, for which Kovalev had a power of attorney, was identified by one of the witnesses. Kovalev was questioned again, this time warning that if he did not begin to cooperate with the investigation, the responsibility for killing nine people would lie only on him. Kovalyov admitted to complicity in the raid, but he did not know where the Shpagon might be located.
Arrest
Soon, data arrived that Shpagonov came to his cousin, washed himself, changed his clothes and left. Then he called his former teacher at vocational schools, so that she would contact his relatives and through them would give him warm clothes, as he was about to flee to Siberia. Police found out that the call was made from the station of the city of Agryz . A group of capture went there, and in the morning of May 4, 1992, Shpagonov was detained. He immediately confessed to the crime and showed the place in the river where he threw the gun.
Since there was no moratorium on the death penalty, Shpagonov understood that he was facing execution. He tried to impersonate a madman, talking about voices in his mind, ordering him to kill. But the forensic psychiatric examination found him sane and able to answer for their actions.
Court and Execution
A few months later the trial of Shpagonov and Kovalyov took place. Already on August 28, 1992, the sentence was pronounced. Dmitry Kovalev was sentenced to 15 years in prison, Andrei Shpagonov himself was sentenced to death. Shpagon petitioned for pardon and review of the case, but they were all rejected. On November 11, 1995, the sentence was carried out [2] .
Dmitry Kovalev was released early in 2005. His fate is unknown.
Lala Farzeeva, who wrote the name of Shpagonov, survived and was awarded the Order "For Personal Bravery. "
On April 26, 2012, on the 20th anniversary of the tragedy, Farzeeva gave an interview to representatives of the program "Capital: Results of the Week."
