According to US authorities, from 2010 to 2016, ZTE sold devices manufactured using parts from the United States to Iran and the DPRK . In February 2018, the heads of the American special services of the NSA , the FBI and the CIA recommended that American citizens abandon the use of Huawei and ZTE smartphones, motivated by the fact that the devices could be used by Chinese authorities for covert espionage. In May, the US Department of Defense banned the sale of devices from ZTE and Huawei at US military bases [7] . However, after resolving disagreements with the US government on the issue of selling devices to Iran, bypassing the company's sanctions, a trial period was set until the end of 2020. During this period, the court and the U.S. Department of Commerce planned to monitor the activities of ZTE, including its supply of equipment and technology. The trade department established deeper monitoring of the company and access to information on ZTE operations than that of a court for up to 10 years. Later, ZTE violated the terms of the settlement agreement because it did not dismiss employees involved in the illegal supply of US equipment to Iran. In October 2018, the trial period for the company was extended to 2022 [8] .

In May 2018, the company suspended operations due to US sanctions [9] . However, on May 25, US President Donald Trump confirmed the information that his administration had reached an agreement with ZTE to remove restrictions on doing business with American companies imposed on it [10] .

In March 2019, it became known that ZTE plans to release a new side smartphone-slider called the ZTE Axon S, which will have a retractable design [11] .
