Vinnie Colaiuta ( born Vinnie (Vincent) Colaiuta ; February 5, 1956 , Brownsville , PA ) is an American drummer who lives in Los Angeles . He began playing drums as a child and received his first drum kit from his parents at the age of 14. The musician is notable for his versatility - he collaborated with famous musicians of various directions and genres.

Early career
After a year of study at the College of Music, Berkeley ( Boston ), Colayuta moves to Los Angeles . He gets fame in April 1978 , when he joins after listening to Frank Zappa . He recorded a number of albums with him: Tinseltown Rebellion , Joe's Garage, and Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar . The Kolaiuta parts from the Joe's Garage album were included in the list of the 25 best percussion parts of all time according to Modern Drummer magazine .
Session Work
After leaving Zappa, Kolayuta worked with many rock and pop artists, including Gino Vannelli , Joni Mitchell , Barbra Streisand , Sandy and Junior , Clannad , Wang Chung , Chaka Han and Jeff Beck . He also collaborated with some jazz musicians: Chick Corea , Herbie Hancock , Jimmy Haslip , Quincy Jones , Buddy Rich , Buell Neidlinger and John Patitucci .
Work with Sting
In 1990, Kolayuta joined Sting as a drummer, working on a concert tour in support of The Soul Cages ; was Sting's drummer for the next seven years. He refused to take part in the Brand New Day tour and left the group, justifying that he was tired of a grueling tour. Kolyuta's percussion parts can be heard on Ten Summoner's Tales , Mercury Falling , Brand New Day (3 songs) and Sacred Love (2 songs) studio albums.
In 2003, he again worked in the Sting team in the Sacred Love promotion, but refused to participate in a world tour.
Subsequent Career
Kolayuta is considered one of the most popular session drummers for recording albums, soundtracks, television and radio jingles .
From 2006 to 2009 he toured with Jeff Beck and Tel Wickenfield . He also performed with Faith Hill , recorded drums for The System Has Failed album of the thrash metal band Megadeth .
Since 2013, he has been working as a drummer in projects of Joe Satriani .
