Donley County is located in the United States , Texas . It was officially formed in 1882 and named after Stockton Donley, a frontier attorney who participated in the Civil War . As of 2000, the population was 3828 people. The district center is the city of Clarendon .

According to the United States Census Bureau , the county has a total area of 2,417 km², of which 2,408 km² are land and 8 km² or 0.35% are water bodies.

According to the 2000 census [1] , 3,828 residents lived in the district, consisting of 1,578 households and 1,057 families. The population density was 2 people per 1 square kilometer. There were 2378 residential buildings, with a density of coverage of 1 building per 1 square kilometer. The racial composition of the population was 91.41% white, 3.94% black or African American , 0.89% Native American , 0.1% Asian, 2.72% of other races, and 0.94% were representatives of two or more races . 6.35% of the population were Hispanic or Latino.
Of the 1578 households, 24.8% raise children under the age of 18, 56.7% of married couples living together, 7.5% of single women, 33% did not have families. 31.4% of the total number live on their own, 17% of people over 65 living alone. On average, 2.3 households per household; the average family size was 2.86 people.
