Creation History

The band signed to Active Records because the deal with the previous Deaf Records label limited the release of only one album, and the relationship between Therion and the publisher was unfriendly. Recording of the second album began in 1991 at Montezuma Studio. Before that, the bass player Eric Gustafsson left the band, deciding to return home to the USA, but Therion continued to perform now as a trio - Peter Hansson, Oscar Forss and replacement bass player Christopher Jonsson .

After recording the album, the group held their first live performances in Central Europe, primarily in the Netherlands and Belgium. At the same time, she struggled with problems: Forss decided to leave the group, Hansson left Therion due to health problems. Performances continued with the new roster. Peter Vavzheniuk , a member of the Carbonized band, where he was with Jonsson, became a drummer, Andreas Val became a bass player, and old school friend Jonsson Magnus Bartelsson became a guitarist.

The album received critical acclaim, was called a brilliant death metal [3] and a classic of the genre [4] .

Style and Lyrics

In Beyond Sanctorum, Therion began to incorporate elements of classical and other music into his work. This album demonstrates the experimental facet of death metal , using keyboards, pure male and female vocals, and Persian motifs. The main riff is not much different from most Stockholm death metal bands; the chorus uses classic harmonic moves, and the lead is focused on melodies. In general, the structure and dynamics of the album are similar to those standard for the European death metal school. The sound is reminiscent of Therion's earlier work and is characteristic of Sunlight.

The lyrics acquired a mystical connotation. The group began to inspire the works of Howard Lovecraft . The song β€œCthulhu” refers the listener to the monstrous deity Cthulhu created by this writer.
