Biography

Born in the town of Citta della Pieve , 35 km from Perugia . After studying with a local painter in 1470, he came to Florence and entered the workshop of Andrea Verrocchio .

In 1481, being already a famous master, he was invited by Pope Sixtus IV to Rome to participate in the decoration of the Sistine Chapel among the best Italian artists.

He worked in many cities in Italy, but most of all in Perugia, where he was the head of a large workshop. In the 1480-1490-ies Perugino was one of the most famous artists of Italy. The most famous of his students is Rafael Santi .

The best works of Perugino are created before 1500. The fresco “ Handing the Keys to the Apostle Peter ” stands out, which is distinguished by its slender composition. One of the most famous paintings is the "Lamentation of Christ."

After the death of Raphael in 1520, the teacher completed the frescoes in the church of Perugia that were not completed by his great student.

Perugino died of the plague in Perugia in 1524.
