Creation History
Harley Quinn created Armie Hammer for the animated series Batman . In the episode " Joker's Favor ," according to the authors, someone had to jump out of a cake in a room full of policemen. It was decided that it would be strange for the Joker to do this, and there was a need to create an appropriate assistant clown, although it was the Joker who did this in the final version of the episode scenario. Paul Dini decided it would be interesting for a girl to become such a character. Over the course of 10 days that the script for the episode lasted, the character and role of the heroine constantly changed, at first Dini had the idea of a woman - a thug in dark glasses who would obey the Joker unquestioningly, but then Dini came up with the idea to make the heroine funny so she could joke and sometimes even funnier than the Joker, which would make him angry with her.
When it came time to choose a character’s name, the author had a lot of names spinning around, like Colombina, but in the end, Harley Quinn was chosen, which sounds like “harlequin”.
The heroine was voiced by Arlene Sorkin, an actress who played in the soap opera Days of Our Life , in one of the episodes of which she appears in a jester costume. This scene inspired Dini to create Harley. [1] Since Dini was familiar with Sorkin from college, he added personality and appearance to the character's image. Other sources, according to Sorkin, were James Kagney's assistants from gangster movies and Adelaide from the musical Guys and Dolls .
Gradually, the nature and role of Harley changed, all changes were accepted during the discussions between Paul Dini, Bruce Timm and Alan Barnett.
Biography
Harlin Quinzel was a born gymnast and, earning a sports scholarship, went to university. She was interested in a prestigious psychiatrist diploma, but she was not going to strain in her studies - instead, the girl seduced teachers, in whose subjects she did not have time. Harley planned to become a popular psychologist with her own series of books and went to work at Arkham Psychiatric Hospital to earn a name for herself in the most difficult cases of killer maniacs. After three months of persuasion, the leadership allowed her to conduct sessions with the Joker, who fell in love with her. Harley helps the villain escape, and when the hospital management finds out about this, Quinn soon finds herself in the clinic, but already as a patient. [2]
After the events of Nobody’s Land , when the earthquake destroyed Gotham and he was expelled from the United States, Harley was able to escape from the destroyed Arkham, find the Harlequin costume and find the Joker, who allowed his savior to join the gang. Soon, Quinn first encountered personally Batman, but was able to escape from him. The Joker did not like the fact that Harley evoked positive feelings in him, and he tried to kill her. Another gotham criminal, Poison Ivy, found the wounded villain. The girls became friends, and Ivy even gave her friend a remedy that served as an antidote to all toxins, and also increased Harley's strength, speed and strength. Quickly enough, she, despite a recent attempt at reprisal, forgives the Joker, and they again became a duet.
Harley helped the Joker in a variety of atrocities. For example, she participated in the implementation of his plan to abduct and blow up several dozen children born a year before the Cataclysm, as a result of which the heroes save the children, but the clown killed Sarah Essen, the police officer and wife of Commissioner James Gordon . [3] [4] [5] [6] She and the Joker also tried to avenge Lex Luther for the restoration of Gotham, but they were prevented by Superman. [7]
Once, the Clown Prince of the Underworld deceived the almost omnipotent imp from the 5th dimension of Mr. Mixixplick and gained 99% of his strength, proclaiming himself Emperor Joker, the lord of the Earth. He created the Joker League of Anarchy, where Harley served him, among other villains, until, as a joke, the all-powerful tyrant turned her into a constellation in the night sky. [eight]
When the three Greek gods Deimos, Eris and Phobos, children of the god of war Ares, wake up after many hundreds of years of sleep and inhabit the Joker, Poison Ivy and Scarecrow, Deimos decides to sacrifice Ares exactly Harley Quinn to thereby bring the god of war to Earth, but the heroes stop them. [9]
Despite all the suffering caused by the Joker, Harley helped him out of the Scourge supervillain prison, and while the Joker was withdrawing from prison, she managed the Clown’s affairs, so successfully that the Joker decided to get rid of her. He shot at his former lover, but it turned out to be Poison Ivy in a Harlequin costume. Seeing the betrayal, the girl beat the Joker and broke off relations with him. [10] First, Harley went to the gang to Two-Faced, [11] but then organized her own gang of five people - a “ quintet ” (a pun, a team of five and a reference to the villain's nickname), [12] but they soon decided to kill the leader , as a result of which the clowness was injured and considered herself Batgirl, and, putting on her costume, tried to heroize herself. [13]
When psychiatrists decided to conduct experimental therapy and informed the Joker that he was going to die soon, he launched a riot in the Scourge, fired an army of supervillains, pumped his poison, set up a disaster on a planetary scale, and finally decided to acquire an heir, choosing his former passion for this. But Harley did not like this option, and she teamed up with superheroes to stop the crazy clown. [14] [15]
After all this, Harley and Ivy moved to Metropolis, where Quinn managed to get a job on the Daily Planet as the author of a column of love tips, escape from Bizarro in love with her, and finally explode with a jetpack. [sixteen]
Once the villain went to hell, where she rebelled the dead villains, and then got the demon Etrigan so that he drove her back, returning to Earth [17] But it turned out that only the soul of Quinn returned, and the body remained destroyed, the psychopath began to move from the body into the body until the Martian Hunter and Zatanna returned her body. [18]
After some time, Harley began to harm the mysterious enemy, who framed the villain, whom she exposed and sent to the hospital. [nineteen]
Also, among the main enemies of Batman, Harley participated in the plan of Hash and Riddler to destroy the hero . [20] , then, together with the girl, she escaped from the Gotham bandits, after which she returned to the clinic for treatment. [21] Together with many villains, she escaped during a secret escapade organized by the Secret Society of Supervillains around the planet, but was stunned as soon as she was outside the hospital. After recovering, Quinn tried to escape from the asylum during a large escape from prisons around the world organized by the Society, but she was stunned at the very moment when she was free [22]
After escaping from Arkham and again in trouble, [23] eventually joined the Secret Six mercenary team and fought with them against the team of birds of prey heroines. [24]
After leaving the team, she again arrived in Metropolis, having received an offer to work as a psychoanalyst in the center of Amazons for women. [25]
Having made friends there with Holly Robinson, a girlfriend and former assistant to Catwoman, Harley decided to become a real Amazon. But it soon became clear that the center was organized by Granny Goodness, Darkseid's servant, and the girls fell on the planet of evil Apokolips. There they liberated the captive gods and received strength from them (Harley - from the muse of the comedy of Talia ), then battles and travels to various worlds followed. [26] [27]
Finally, Harley teamed up with Poison Ivy again, as well as with the thief Catwoman, and together they formed the Gotham Sirens team. [28] The girls survived a lot - the attack of the former assistant of the Joker, avenging Harley, [29] visited the Queensel family, [30] saved the Catwoman from the Black Mask, tried to take revenge on the Joker, managed to quarrel and make peace [31] , and also fought with Talia al ghul. [32]
New 52
In 2011, DC Comics rebooted their entire comic universe, and as a result, many characters and events underwent changes, which, of course, touched Harley Quinn. The most important moments of the biography remain - she is still the Joker psychiatrist and helps him escape from Arkham. But like her beloved, she receives several different stories of origin. According to one version of the events, Harlin from the very beginning of working with the Joker understands that he is a lying psychopath, creating chaos around himself, so that, being at his epicenter, enjoy the horror that is happening. However, he still falls in love with him and, when he finds out that her boss stole her research, frees the clown from anger and runs away with him. [33] Another story says that Harlin, having received an excellent education, goes to work in a hospital, as she is interested in the personalities and minds of criminals. There, as an experiment, she pretends to be a patient, but the Joker who has bitten her seduces the girl, and they escape. [34]
Further events are more unambiguous: the Joker brings Harlin to the Chemicals chemical plant to show where he was “reborn”, and throws his beloved into a vat with chemicals so that she, like he once, changes. Harley acquired white skin, and her hair turned red-blue (red-black depending on the picture). She finally lost her mind, which, however, was only glad.
After the Joker cuts off his face and disappears from Gotham, Harley begins to attack the people responsible for his imprisonment, and this ends with the Black Canary arresting her, and Amanda Waller, then, forces Quinn to join the Suicide Squad. There, she ties up a romantic relationship with another member of the team - Deadshot . When the girl finds out that it is rumored that the Joker is dead, she attacks the Gotham Police Department to get the clown's cut-off face. She succeeds, after which she ties up the Deadshot who came after her, puts the face of the Joker on him and speaks to him as if with a lover. But Deadshot cunningly frees himself and injures Harley.
After the Joker returns to Gotham, he abducts her and forces her to help him set a trap for Batman. The clown puts Harley in his old Red Cap costume, and she lures Batman to the AC Chemicals, where sworn enemies first met. Batman demands that Harley tell him where the Joker is. But she only replies in tears that this is no longer "her Joker."
It is also possible that Harley was not the first Joker girlfriend: after Quinn helped him, the Joker tries to cut her face, but when she refuses, he puts her in a chain and locks her in the basement, where the corpses of other girls dressed almost the same like Harley, and there he tells her the following: “What? Thought you were the first ?! I’ll tell you so: you are far from the last! ” [35]
Rebirth
In June 2016, DC Comics restarted their comic universe again, but this time the events that took place since 2011 did not reset. Nevertheless, some changes did occur, for example, they are associated with the appearance of the characters. From now on, Harley Quinn has become more like her version in the DC Universe : she is blonde again, but the ends of her hair are painted in blue and pink; short t-shirts with inscriptions appeared in her wardrobe, however, tight shorts, pants and jackets remained; favorite weapon is still a giant hammer, but sometimes they are replaced by a pair of pistols.
In the Suicide Squad comic book line, Harley works in teams with Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, Enchantress, Katana, and Killer Croc - in other words, the squad from the 2016 Suicide Squad movie has gone into comics. The leader of the team is Rick Flag, with whom Harley at some point has a romantic relationship. [36] However, in Suicide Squad No. 19, Flag is killed, and Amanda Waller is named Quinn as team leader. [37]
Publication History
After the character's success in the animated series, Harley Quinn appeared in comics. This version of the character was more insane and with less paradoxical humor than the image from the cartoon, which brought her closer to the character of the Joker.
Harley Quinn first appeared in comics in The Batman Adventures # 12 in September 1993. [38] The origin of the character was covered in detail in the graphic novel "Crazy Love" , released in 1994. The novel received good reviews from critics [39] and received several awards - the Eisner Award and the Harvey Award for the best single-issue comic book of the year. These and subsequent appearances of Harley Quinn in comics up to Batman: Harley Quinn were non-canonical and did not belong to the main DC Universe. Batman: Harley Quinn , released in October 1999, talked more about the origin of the character, and Harley Quinn was “inscribed” in the canon of DC.
New 52
After rebooting the entire DC comic book universe, Harley Quinn has also undergone changes. The most important moments of the biography remain - she is still a Joker psychiatrist and helps him escape from Arkham.
Instead of the classic Harlequin costume, this version of the heroine wears very revealing clothes - a corset, short shorts and stockings, and now in red and blue colors (sometimes in red and black, depending on the picture). Her hair is painted in the same color. Instead of a huge revolver and a giant wooden hammer, many knives and a metal sledgehammer became her weapon. Quinn later began using the red and black costume theme and a huge hammer.
In November 2013, Harley received her own line of comics. [40] [41] The series became popular and consistently ranked in the top ten best-selling comic-ongoings in the United States.
On September 5, 2013, DC Comics announced a competition for fans and artists called “Break into comics with Harley Quinn!”. [42] In particular, the publisher invited contestants to show Harley in four different suicide scenarios. This contest attracted controversy, not only because it was held a few days before the National Suicide Prevention Week in the United States, but also because some artists did not like Harley's sexual image in the fourth scenario, where Harley was trying to commit suicide in the bathroom by being naked. [43] [44]

Injustice
Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year Two Issue #13 ).
