Story
In the relationship of Hank and Franny, who have been together for five years, there comes a crisis. In Las Vegas, each of them meets his new love.
Production
Initially it was thought that the picture would have a modest budget after the high cost and financial problems of the Apocalypse Today , but the cost of the film quickly increased from the planned $ 2 million to more than 25 million due to the construction of the scenery. The scale of their production was brought to such an extent that an exact copy of the Las Vegas airport and jet airliner (built from the nose of the crashed aircraft) was built for the penultimate scene of the film. The scenery occupied the entire space of the sound pavilion of the newly acquired Coppola Studio American Zoetrope . Due to the plexus of electrical wiring and the accumulation of flammable materials, Dean Tavolaris jokingly called the scenery a “fire trap”.
The soundtrack authors are Crystal Gale and Tom Waits, who received an Academy Award nomination for best film music. The Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart and musician Bobby Vega were also noted for contributing to the production of the film.
Charges and Criticism
The extraordinarily high costs of the production of the film led to the fact that Coppola declared his bankruptcy. Having collected in the United States in the first week 389 thousand dollars, the picture in the film distribution failed with a total collection of 636 thousand dollars [1] . Coppola said that during the remaining 1980s and most of the 1990s, he made films to pay off debts made during the film “With all my heart.”
Along with the films “ Gates of Paradise ”, “ Wanted ” and “ They All Laugh ” - was regarded as the end of the New Hollywood period. Because of the financial failure of these films, Hollywood studios never again allowed directors to manage the films they finance.
American film critic Roger Ebert called the film “a big disappointment” after “ Apocalypse Now ” and “The Godfather ” [2] .
