Belonged to Salihiya , that is, to the Mamluks, bought and trained during the reign of the Ayyubid Sultan of Egypt, as-Salih Ayyub ( 1240 - 1249 ). After ascending the throne in March 1257, the fifteen - year- old al-Mansur Ali , son of Aybek , Sanjar al-Khalabi became the atabek (guardian) of the young sultan, but was soon removed and arrested by Kutuz . However, after the battle of Ain Jalut ( September 3, 1260 ), Kutuz, who by that time had become a sultan, placed Sanjar as the naib (ruler) of Damascus .
Upon learning of the assassination of Kutuz and the usurpation of power by Baybars , al-Khalabi declared himself an independent ruler ( naib al-saltan ), but was deposed by Aydakin al-Bundukdar (January 17, 1261 ).
Despite his rebellion, Sanjar was friendly adopted by Baybars in Egypt and appointed Naib Aleppo , having received an ikta corresponding to his status (before that he had only 60 horsemen in his possession). In 1271, he was arrested for conspiracy, but then released again.
After the defeat at Jasur ( June 21, 1280 ) of the rebellious emir Sunkur al-Ashkar , who proclaimed himself the independent ruler of Damascus, Sultan Kalaun appointed Sanjar as Naib of Damascus.
October 29, 1281 he participated in the defeat of the Mongols at Homs , fighting on the left flank of the army of Calauna.
Around 1283, Sanjar was arrested by the Sultan, alarmed by his popularity among the inhabitants of Damascus. Having found his freedom, probably in the reign of al-Ashraf Khalil (1290-1293), he was restored to the possession of his ikt and died peacefully in his bed in 1293.
