History
Sarasota County was formed in 1921 . Although this area was called so from the very beginning of the arrival of the Europeans, the origin of the name Sarasota is not exactly known. Perhaps it came from a word in the language of the Indian tribe Kalus , meaning "place of stones" or "place of dance." At the beginning of the 20th century, a show was held in Sarasota, in which the district got its name in honor of the daughter of the famous traveler Hernando de Soto , whose name was Sarah.
Geography
The county is located in the western part of the state. Borders on counties: Manati (in the north), De Soto (in the east) and Charlotte (in the south). In the west it is washed by the waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
Population
According to the 2000 census, the population of the district is 325,957. Racial composition: white - 92.65%; African Americans - 4.18%; Asians - 0.77%; Native Americans - 0.22%; Oceanians - 0.03%; other races - 1.14%; representatives of two or more races - 1.02%. English is considered native by 89.7% of the population; Spanish - 4.4% German - 1.3%; French - 1%.
Age structure: up to 18 years: 16.2%; from 18 to 24 years: 5%; 25 to 44 years old: 21.7% from 45 to 64 years: 25.6%; over 64 years old - 31.5%. The average age of the population is 50 years. For every 100 females there are 90 males.
