Title
The name has been known since 1798 [3] and comes from the name of the construction contractor Pikalov [4] . At the end of the XVIII century. there was also the name Pereshivkin Bridge , since the Pereshivkin drinking house was nearby. After 1812, the modern name was finally assigned to the bridge [5] .
History
In 1783 - 1785 during the construction of granite embankments, a bridge was built according to the standard design developed for the Kryukov Canal bridges and the lower reaches of the Catherine’s Canal : wooden three-span, on rubble supports lined with granite, with an adjustable middle span [6] [1] [7] . The author of the project is not installed. Of the three bridges built at the same time (Pikalov, Malo-Kalinkin , Alarchin ), only Pikalov bridge retained a look close to the original [6] .
In the second half of the XIX century. the adjustable span was replaced by a constant [6] .
In 1905, wooden beams were replaced with metal riveted continuous systems [1] . The work was carried out under the supervision of an engineer P. A. Likhachev [8] .
In 1953, according to the project of architect A. L. Rotach , brackets with oval lanterns of the Washington type were restored, and in 1969 gilding of "cones" on granite obelisks was restored [9] [10] .
In 1982 - 1984 the bridge was thoroughly repaired according to the project of engineers L. N. Sobolev and R. R. Shipov [1] [10] . In the course of the work, the pile foundations of supports and foundations were reinforced; re-shifted the body of abutments and supports with the restoration of granite cladding; a metal three-span continuous structure was replaced by a reinforced concrete slab beam-split system. The historical appearance and design features of the bridge have been preserved.
In 1993, oval lanterns of the Washington type [9] [10] were recreated.
Design
The bridge is three-span reinforced concrete, girder. The span consists of reinforced concrete slabs [9] . Abutments and intermediate supports of rubble masonry on a pile foundation with massive granite lining. The facades of the superstructure are faced with a metal sheet. The bridge is 22.8 (25.0) m long and 10.6 m wide [1] .
The bridge is designed for traffic and pedestrians. The carriageway of the bridge includes 2 lanes for the movement of vehicles. The roadway and sidewalks are covered with asphalt; granite slabs are laid on the sidewalks on the sidewalks on the sidewalks. The sidewalks are separated from the roadway by a high granite parapet. The metal railings of a simple pattern, consists of horizontal steel bars mounted on cast-iron posts. On the lateral roundings of the middle supports outside the span, granite obelisks are mounted on curly pedestals, completed with gilded “cones”. On the obelisks there are oval lanterns of the Washington type.
