History
New Bern was founded in 1710 by immigrants from Switzerland and Germany, led by Count Christoph von Graffenried, Franz Louis Michel and John Lawson. By order of von Graffenried, the city was originally laid in the form of a cross. It housed the first permanent colonial government of North Carolina and the governor. After the Revolution, the city became the state capital. In 1770, the Trion Palace was built, which became a government building. The palace burned down in the 1790s; its replica, erected in 2008, is now a tourist attraction. In the 1800s, New Bern was the largest city in the state.
