History
The first railway in Bulgaria ( Rousse - Varna , 223 km long) was built in 1865 by a British company, one of the investors was William Ewart Gladstone , the railway began to function on November 7, 1866.
In 1963, the electrification of the railroads began; the first section of the electrified railroad began operating in 1964. In 2001, the Bulgarian Railways became one of the first to introduce the European train control system into regular operation. The new system was first introduced on the Plovdiv - Burgas line [1] .
On January 1, 2002, in accordance with the decision of the Government of Bulgaria, the unified national company Bulgarian Railways ( NK BDZ , National Company Bulgarian Bulgari Railways) was divided into two independent companies: Bulgarian Railways EAD (Bulgarian Railways Railways EAD ) and NKZHI ( National company Zhelezopatna Infrastructure ).
In March 2013, the Bulgarian government decided to privatize the cargo branch of the Bulgarian State Railways for $ 66 million, this decision caused widespread protests from the population [2]
