Biography
Louis Robert Gendre was born June 19, 1921 in Marseille in the family of the hotel owner Henry Gendre and Yvonne Gendre ( nee Jourdan ) and was one of three sons.
He was educated in France, the UK and Turkey. He studied drama at École Dramatique ( Rene Simon class).
In 1939, Jourdan made his film debut in the movie Corsair . Possessing spectacular external data throughout his career, he was forced to play mainly the roles of romantic handsome men, lovers and seducers.
He played with his brother Pierre in the drama Untel Père et Fils (Heart of the Nation) by French director Julien Duvivier.
During World War II , when his father was arrested by the Gestapo , Louis and his two brothers joined the French resistance. The actor also refused to appear in propaganda films, and films with his participation were not shown [2] .
In 1947, the famous American producer David Selznik invited Louis Jourdan to Hollywood . Louis Jourdan played a leading role in Alfred Hitchcock's film “ The Paradine Affair ” (Andre Latois, 1947). The most widely known to Jourdan was brought by Vincent Minnelli 's musical film " Gout " (Gaston, 1958).
In 1961, he played the main role of Edmond Dantes in the film by Claude Otan Lara "Count of Monte Cristo" , and in 1975 played in the same film by his opponent Villefort. After this role, Jourdan established himself as a villain. In 1977, he played in Count Dracula in the BBC film of the same name, and in the 80s he created the images of James Bond's treacherous enemy - Kamal Khan in the movie Octopus (1983) and the evil genius Dr. Anton Erkane in a dilogy about the Swamp critter . At this time, Jourdan also played in American and French television series (in particular, in the Colombo series). The actor continued to work actively both in Europe and in Hollywood until the early 1990s. His last film work was the role of Philip in the film “The Year of the Comet ” (1992).
Louis Jourdan has a number of different awards and a rare honor to have two stars on the “Walk of Fame” in Hollywood . On July 22, 2010, he was also awarded the rank of officer of the Legion of Honor . The award ceremony took place in Los Angeles , in the presence of the wife of the actor and his friends Kirk Douglas and Sidney Poitier .
In recent years, Louis Jourdan lived in southern France in Viella and in his home in Beverly Hills , California , where he died on February 14, 2015.
Personal life
On March 11, 1946, Louis Jourdan married Berthe Frédérique, 1921-2014.
His only son, Louis-Henri Jourdan (born October 6, 1951), died of a drug overdose on May 12, 1981, and was buried in the cemetery of Westwood Village Memorial Park, Los Angeles, California.
