Biography and Creativity
Sebastiano Luciani was born in the city of Venice around 1485. He was a student of Giovanni Bellini [2] . In the early works of Piombo, the influence of Giorgione and Titian is felt.
In 1511, the artist moved to the city of Rome, where he was invited by the famous banker Agostino Chigi to decorate with a painting of his villa, now known as Farnesinskaya . Here he wrote scenes from Ovid 's Metamorphoses and other works. These murals did not please the customer, as a result of which the artist was eliminated from further work. However, he remained in the Italian capital and became close to Raphael . His works acquire rigor, become more balanced, but at the same time do not lose the Venetian flavor. Thus, he soon became one of the most remarkable portrait painters and a historical eclectic painter, whom many of his contemporaries looked at as the new messiah of painting [2] .
After 1515, the paintings of Sebastiano del Piombo acquire a dramatic coloring: this is due to the influence of Michelangelo , which he exerts on the Venetian. As an illustration, you can specify the painting "The Resurrection of Lazarus", written from 1517 to 1519. The artistβs works created during the period of the counter-reformation are distinguished by the gloomy severity of the imagery (for example, the painting βCarrying the Crossβ), indicating a crisis of artistic principles of the High Renaissance.
In 1527, the invasion of the German-Spanish army in Rome forced the artist to retire to Venice, where he painted several paintings, among which an amazing portrait of Andrea Doria and the excellent Carrying the Cross. Upon his return, he received from Pope Clement VII in 1531 a lucrative position as a keeper and applier of lead seals to papal bulls and letters (hence his nickname "del Piombo"; il piombo = lead) and on this occasion he took a vow of monasticism. Toward the end of his life, he dealt almost exclusively with portraits and practiced versification [2] .
Sebastiano del Piombo owns portraits of many of his famous contemporaries ( Christopher Columbus , Pope Clement VII , Julia Gonzaga , Pietro Aretino , etc.). His biography was written by Giorgio Vasari .
Sebastiano del Piombo died on June 21, 1547 in the city of Rome .
