It was in these places that the Wright brothers carried out their first in the world flights on a motor airplane on December 17, 1903. The sand dunes of Kill Devil Hills, 6 miles south of Kitty Hawk, were chosen by the Wright brothers due to the constant steady winds and the then remoteness of the area.
Name Origin
The name of the sand dunes of Kill Devil Hills ("devil-killing hills") originated in the colonial era. At that time, shipwrecks took place in these stormy places and many vessels transported barrels of rum . Locals collected shipwrecks thrown by the ocean, including barrels of rum, which they hid behind the sand dunes of the spit. The rum was so strong that, as the locals said, it could "knock down the devil" ("kill the devil"). Over time, this stuck to the name of the dunes.
