Biography

Born November 11, 1929 in the family of a famous musicologist, researcher of Jewish folklore, Moses Yakovlevich Beregovsky (1892-1961). She studied at the secondary school of Kiev № 45 [1] . She graduated from Kiev State University , worked as a teacher in the Donetsk region. Since 1962, E. M. Beregovskaya is a teacher at Smolensk State University . For 25 years, she headed the department of the French language, taught courses “Stylistics”, “Functional Styles of Speech”, “Interpretation of Text”, “Theory and Practice of Translation” at the Smolensk State University , and taught analytical reading.

E. M. Beregovskaya defended her candidate dissertation on the problem of synonymy (“The stylistic functions of synonyms on the material of Flaubert's works”) in 1964 at Lviv State University . The doctoral dissertation, “Language of Fiction and Social Dialect,” based on French prose material from the 1950s and 1970s, was defended in 1979 at the Institute of Linguistics of the USSR Academy of Sciences .

Doctoral dissertation formed the basis of the monograph by E. M. Beregovskaya “Argo and the language of French fiction of the 20th century (50-70s)”, published in Smolensk in 2009. In recent decades, a lot of research on social dialects has appeared, but the book E. M. Beregovskaya remains the only general monograph on argo in the language of French prose, not only in Russia but also in France: now the French translation of this book is being prepared for publication at the Les Éditions Classiques Garnier Paris publishing house.

In the studies of E. M. Beregovskaya [2] , four main directions can be distinguished:

  1. Expressive syntax and grammatical stylistics;
  2. The stylistic potential of substandard vocabulary: argo , French social dialects;
  3. Problems of individual style: a study of the writers and poets of the XIX — XX centuries. from a linguistic-stylistic point of view ( S. G. Colette , J. Sharpantro , M. Tsvetaeva, O. Grigoriev , T. Beck, etc.);
  4. French language teaching methodology.

Conference “Rhetoric in the Light of Modern Linguistics”

In 1999, E. M. Beregovskaya organized a scientific conference “Rhetoric in the Light of Modern Linguistics” at the Smolensk State University . Since then, the conference has been held regularly - every two years, in early June. Scientists from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, France, and the USA come to the conference. By tradition, the first meeting opens with a concert. By the beginning, a collection of abstracts is being issued; according to the results, a collection of reports. From 1999 to 2011, E. M. Beregovskaya was the permanent organizer and inspirer of this conference [3] .
