Geography

The city is located in the western part of the Zhytomyr region on the banks of the river Sluch , 217 km west of Kiev. Through the Novograd-Volynsky pass the international highway Kyiv - Lviv - Chop , the state highway Vaskovichi-Porubnoye, as well as regional roads. Junction railway station of the South-Western Railway (line to Zhitomir and Korosten - Shepetovka ).

History

As part of the Commonwealth, the town of Zvyagel belonged to the princes of Lubomir . After the partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1793, Zvyagel (part of eastern Volhynia ) passed to the Russian Empire by decree of Catherine II of July 5, 1795 Zvyagel was renamed Novograd-Volynsky and appointed the provincial center of the newly formed Volyn province .

After the death of Catherine II, Emperor Paul I transferred the provincial center to the city of Zhytomyr , and Novograd-Volynsky received the status of a county town.

In 1907, the county town of the Novogradvolynsky district of the Volyn province [2] .

From April to June 1920, the city was occupied by Polish troops . Released by the Red Army on June 27 as a result of the Novograd-Volyn operation . I. Babel tells about the behavior of the Bolsheviks in the city in the stories of the Konarmia cycle (The Church in Novograd, Pan Apolek).

From 1932 to 1939 the city ​​was the headquarters of the Novograd-Volyn fortified area [3] [4] [5] .

From 1935 to 1939 in the city of Novograd-Volynsk there were control and units of the 14th Cavalry Division ( KVO , 2nd Cavalry Corps , from 26.07.1938 the Cavalry Army Group ). In 1935-1937, Novograd-Volynsky was the center of the eponymous district . After the creation of the Zhytomyr region on September 22, 1937, Novograd-Volynsky became the regional center of the region.

In 1936, the House of the Red Army was built according to the project of the architect Joseph Karakis .

July 31, 1938 - July 1940 the 24th light tank brigade of the Kiev Special Military District was located in the city [9] .

Since July 5, 1941, the troops of the restored Novograd-Volyn fortified area of ​​the South-Western Front entered into hostilities against German troops . [3] , [10]

July 10, 1941, Soviet authorities and troops left the city occupied by German troops.

During the Great Patriotic War , the Novograd-Volyn underground operated in the city. Among the underground fighters of Novograd-Volynsky who were shot on November 6, 1943 was one of the participants of the Young Guard - Vasily Borisov with his brother and mother [11] .

The troops participating in the liberation of Novograd-Volynsky were ordered to be thanked by order of the Supreme Command of the Supreme Soviet of the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics on January 3, 1944, and 12 salvoes of 124 guns were saluted in Moscow .

By order of the Supreme High Command on January 3, 1944, to commemorate the victory, the formations and units that distinguished themselves in the battles for the liberation of the city of Novograd-Volynsky received the name Novograd-Volynskyh: [12] , [13] , [14]

On the outskirts of the city, a memorial complex was built in honor of the tankers who distinguished themselves here in battles with the Nazi invaders. In the center of the complex is a pedestal with a tank, on the armor of which there is an inscription - “Merciless”. [16] [17]

In 1966, the Novograd-Volynsky meat-packing plant was built and commissioned [18] (it stopped production at the beginning of 2013) [19] .

On January 13, 1971, the Novograd-Volyn Flax Mill was put into operation (with a capacity of 2,200 tons of products per year) [20] , and in 1971 a club with 800 places was built [21] .

In 1995, at the initiative of the city authorities near the garrison House of Officers on the street. Levanevsky erected a monument to the victims of fascism .

February 25, 1871 in Novograd-Volynsky, was born Larisa Petrovna Kosach-Kvitka , known to the world as an outstanding Ukrainian poetess, playwright, social activist Lesya Ukrainka.

The Kosach family lived in Novograd-Volynsky for 11 years, in particular, in this house for 2 years. A small white house survived, despite all the wars of the 1st half of the 20th century. And in 1963, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the poet's memory, a museum-library was opened in it. February 25, 1971 in honor of the 100th anniversary of Lesya Ukrainka as a department of the Zhytomyr Regional Museum of Local Lore, the literary and memorial museum of Lesya Ukrainka was opened here.

In the memorial part, its three rooms, the life of Kosachs in Zvyagel was recreated: documents, paintings, photographs, books, furniture of those times.

According to the census of 1897, out of 16,904 people considered their native language: 9,363 (55.4%) - Jewish , 2,939 (17.4%) - Russian, 2,662 (15.7%) - Ukrainian, 1,291 (7.6%) - Polish [22] .
