Stratiots

Stratiots ( Greek: στρατιώτες ) - in the Byzantine Empire, the so-called warriors recruited from free peasants, obliged to serve in the militia of the Themes . At the head of the feminine army was a stratig , in the hands of which was the entire military and civilian power in the femmes . The emergence of the stratiotic estate is inextricably linked with the creation of the feminine system in the Byzantine Empire.

For their service, stratiots received land plots from the state in hereditary possession, were exempted from all taxes except land.

According to imperial decrees, stratiots were forbidden to sell property from which they performed military service; the military site necessarily passed from father to son with the same obligation of military service; in the event of the division of the plot between several joint heirs, they were obliged to serve from the pool; the private property of a stratiot recorded in military scribe books was also not subject to alienation; nobles or officials, the metropolitan, bishop, monastery, charitable institutions, etc., were eliminated from the purchase of military plots and the right of inheritance.
