Geography
The city is located 286 km west of Tver , on the spurs of the Valdai Upland , in the upper reaches of the Western Dvina , 20 kilometers from its source.
History
In the XVIII - early XX centuries, the border between the Pskov and Tver provinces passed along the Zapadnaya Dvina River at the site of the current Andreapol. The Dubna volost center of the Toropetsky district (on the right, Pskov coast) was first mentioned in the Lithuanian metric, dated July 23, 1489. It is from this date that the city is being reckoned with.
In the XVIII century, lands located on the left (Tver) bank of the Zapadnaya Dvina River , around the village of Machikhino of the Ostashkovsky district , were owned by Andrey from the Kushelev family. His estate in 1783 was named Andreiano Pole . In 1806, Kushelev opened here one of the first resorts in the Russian Empire - “Andreapolsky mineral waters”.
When a railway was laid through the village in 1906, a substation village arose, for which the name Andreyapol was fixed , which later transformed into modern Andreapol .
In 1928, the Andreapol substation village was merged with the village of Dubna , and Andreapol became the center of the Leninsky district (formed in 1927 , with the center initially in the village of Khotilitsy ) of the Leningrad Region . Since 1929 - in the Western region , since 1935 - in the Kalinin region .
During the Great Patriotic War, Andreapol was completely destroyed, there were almost no pre-war buildings in the city.
In 1944-1957 was part of the Velikiye Luki region . Since January 12, 1965 - the center of the Andreapolsky district .
The status of the city of Andreapol has been since 1967 [2] .
For a long time in the archives there were no pre-revolutionary or even pre-war photographs depicting the city. However, in 1994, Andreapol was visited by the descendant of the landlords of the Kushelevs, currently residing in Chile , and presented the city with 10 photographs of the pre-revolutionary Andreapol from the archives of the Kushelev family.
