Albi County History
Little is known about Albi’s early history. In documents of the end of the 9th – beginning of the 10th centuries , three counts of Albi are mentioned. The origin of the first graph, Ermengol, has not been established. It is likely that the second mentioned Earl of Albi, Raimund, was one person with Raimund II , the Earl of Toulouse , but the rationale for this version is not yet sufficiently supported by data from historical sources .
The mention of Ponce, Count of Albi in 987 , is a significant fact in county history. The name Pons is associated in the X and XI centuries with the counts of Toulouse. Therefore, it is likely that Pons, Earl of Albi, was the son of Count Raimund III Pons or his son, Count Raimund IV . The lack of earlier information about Ponce suggests that Count Raimund IV was most likely his father. Probably Count Pons died without direct heirs in the county of Albi and it passed to the counts of Toulouse. Most likely, Raimund IV and Raimund V and the subsequent counts of Toulouse right up to Raimund IV of Toulouse bore the title of Counts of Albi.
Albi County became part of the county of Toulouse by the beginning of the XI century , as evidenced by a document dated to the year 1006 , which informs about the meeting of the council of the province of Narbonne in Toulouse , which was attended by Guillaume III of Toulouse .
Albi Viscountus History
The first Viscounts of Albi appeared as far back as the 9th century . The first viscount was Aton I , although it was not proven that he was the founder of the subsequent rulers of Albi. Their first documented ancestor was Bernard I , but it is not known for certain whether he was related to Aton I. Beginning with Bernard II, Viscounts of Albi were also referred to as Viscounts of Nimes . Earlier 962, Raimund Bernard "Trencawel" married Ermengarde , heir to the county of Carcassonne , Beciers Vicoton and Agde , whereby Raimund Bernard's son, Bernard Aton IV , became Viscount Nimes , Albi , Carcassonne , Beziers and Agda . Since Bernard Aton and his heirs used mainly the Viscount Bezier title, Albi became only a minor part of their possessions.
During the IX , X and XI centuries, the Viscounts of Albi were vassals of the counts of Toulouse and Ruerg . It is possible that the latter also called themselves Albi graphs.
At the beginning of the thirteenth century, Simon de Montfort , earl of Leicester , who became the earl of Toulouse and the Duke of Narbonne on the rights of conquest, also titled himself as the viscount of Albi, without taking the last possession into county status.
