Biography
Born into a poor merchant family. He graduated from the Vitebsk gymnasium (1837) and the legal department of St. Petersburg University (1841). Earned private lessons. Since 1842 he served in the Department of Foreign Trade, then in the Commissariat Department. In 1848 he left the service with the rank of titular adviser .
He was a member of the Russian Geographical Society (since 1859). Member of the Committee of the Literary Fund.
He died suddenly from a heart attack. He was buried at the St. George cemetery on Bolshaya Okhta .
Creative activity
He made his debut in print in 1845. He spoke with translated articles and reviews in the " Journal of the Ministry of Public Education " and " Domestic Notes ". Collaborated in the journal " Contemporary ". Since 1852 he became a leading critic of "Domestic Notes". He wrote reviews about the works of I. A. Goncharov , A. A. Fet , A. N. Ostrovsky , A. F. Pisemsky , I. S. Turgenev , Eugenia Tour (E. V. Salias de Turnemir). The first to respond to the literary debut of Leo Tolstoy (1852).
Since 1860 he became a co-publisher and actually editor of the journal "Domestic Notes". Together with A. A. Kraevsky in 1858-1860 he published a series of books, “Historians and Publicists of the Latest Time Translated into Russian.” Prepared the first critical collected works of M. Yu. Lermontov (1860).
