According to the concept of the domain sponsors, it will be a storage area for contact information that users can manage . The .tel domain differs from other top-level domains in that it binds domain names to contact information stored directly in the DNS, which allows individuals and enterprises to use the DNS to store and manage data.

Work Features

When you enter a domain name in the address bar of your browser, a request is sent to DNS. The DNS response does not contain an IP address , as is the case with other domains; instead, DNS returns contact information and keywords located directly on the site page .

In DNS, three types of records are provided for storing owner-specified data: NAPTR, TXT, and LOC. The first allows you to store contact information (phone, fax, e-mail, Skype login, etc.), and the second and third are designed to publish short texts and indicate the location, respectively .

Moreover, the NAPTR data is strictly structured - the user can set the priority of their display . Thus, the domain owner in the TEL zone has the right to independently determine the order in which the contact information indicated by him will be displayed on the screen of a device. For example, the phone number may be the first in the list of published data, and may be displayed after the email address.

TXT format records are created to indicate names, positions, company and organization names, mailing addresses, as well as keywords used in indexing a domain name in the TEL zone by search engines .

As for the LOC data, they have the form of geographical coordinates, which, if desired, can be tied to Google maps .

Another advantage of the TEL domain zone is that all information published in it is active - that is, having received it in response to a query to the DNS system, a domain visitor can immediately use the data, for example, make a phone call or send an e-mail.

The .tel domain is conceived as a single contact phone book containing information about both organizations and individuals . By registering a .tel domain and posting your contact information (telephones, www, e-mail), you get your business card (business card site) on the network, which does not require further costs for creating the site and hosting.

History

This is not the first attempt to launch the .tel domain . A previous application, received back in October 2000 from Jeff Pulver, a VoIP promoter, was rejected. . Palver ’s idea was to simply translate the already unique phone numbers into Internet addresses . However, this would conflict with the existing ENUM scheme, which proposed combining telephone numbers and DNS .

Registration

In Russia, three registrars are accredited in this domain zone: Regional Network Information Center (RU-CENTER, Moscow), Centrohost (Moscow) and Regtime (Samara). In total, there are 112 registrars in the new domain [1] .

During the priority registration period for trademark owners, which was held from December 3, 2008 to February 3, 2009, over 10 thousand world brands registered their marks in the .TEL zone .

  • On March 26, 2009, more than 100 thousand .tel domains were registered [2] .
  • May 21, 2009 - 200,000. [3]

Advantages of the TEL Domain over Others

  • information is available both from computers and from any mobile Internet devices (even from the built-in wap browser) ;
  • the company can place the geographical coordinates of its office - it will be displayed on Google maps ;
  • page loading speed is incomparably higher than with regular web pages ;
  • Incoming traffic when loading a page - less than 10 KB ;
  • search engines index pages at lightning speed .

The address on the new domain has already registered itself with many large corporations: google.tel, apple.tel and so on [4] .
