Biography

Came from a noble family of Kokovtsovs . In 1761 he entered a cadet in the Maritime Gentry Corps , from which he was released on June 16, 1768 as a midshipman in the Baltic Fleet .

In 1769, being on the frigate "Africa" and being in the squadron of Rear Admiral Elfinston, Kokovtsev moved from Kronstadt to Portsmouth and further to the Mediterranean Sea ( First Archipelago Expedition ). There he happened to take part in the battles with the Turks at Chesme and in the Strait of Chios, for the difference he was awarded the Order of St. in 1771 . George 4th degree. Kokovtsev stayed in voyages in the Archipelago until 1775, when he returned to Kronstadt.

In 1780-1781, Kokovtsev commanded the ship "Prince Vladimir" and, being in the squadron of brigade leader N. L. Palibina , sailed to Lisbon and back to Kronstadt. Since 1782 he commanded various ships of the Baltic Fleet: Kilduin kick, Camel transport, Ezekiel and Tsar Constantin battleships.

With the outbreak of the war with the Swedes in 1788, Kokovtsev was promoted to 1st rank captain on April 7, 1788, and was given command of the “Fight” ship, and during the Battle of the Hogland, for an unknown reason, voluntarily left the battle (according to another version, it took too long to help battling Russian ships). For this, Admiral S.K. Greig, he was removed from office and put on trial. In January 1789, the court sentenced Kokovtsev to death, but Empress Catherine II granted Kokovtsev a pardon and, at her highest command, the latter was deprived of all ranks and orders, demoted to sailors and forever transferred to the Black Sea Fleet .

“Every person is sinful, but one who does not want to deserve is unforgivable. To us, cases for justification must be filed according to Christianity and according to humanity. The former captain Kokovtsev subjected himself to the strictness of laws. I asked him here for consumption to give him an opportunity. In the rank of sailor this is impossible, then I order your Grace to call him henceforth not a sailor, but a scientific navigator. With this title, he can rule over the lower ranks that do not have an officer rank. "

- Warrant of Prince Potemkin to Rear Admiral Count Voinovich 1789 June 8

“The scientist navigator Kokovtsev does not have a specific salary, but the man is poor; provide, Your Grace, with a command as to how to produce it, whether it is such as received before his misfortune, or especially. Moreover, my duty tells me to convey that I feel very much about my loss and is torn everywhere, at least to lose my life, but to earn both packs, and I have enough knowledge, from which you can get help. ”

- From the report of Rear Admiral M.I. Voinovich

“The scientist navigator Kokovtsev was assigned to the command of a new boat, and this in the similarity of his salary; ordered to be in charge of the best equipment thereof. ”

- From the report of Rear Admiral M.I. Voinovich
