History
The first written evidence of Kursk iron ore dates back to the 18th century. From the documents it follows that Belgorod merchants more than 200 years ago founded companies for the extraction of iron in the "Belgorod province". Naturally, in those days it was possible to explore only ores that were exposed in ravines and gullies, washed away by groundwater. Extraction was carried out in a primitive, artisanal manner; its volumes were insignificant. They began to pay closer attention to this edge after a steady and incomprehensible deviation of the magnetic needle was discovered here. Since then, the secret of the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly (KMA) has constantly excited the minds of many scientists not only in Russia, but also in other countries of the world. The practical development of the local deposits was seriously taken up at the beginning of the 20th century. In the village of Saltykovo (now a microdistrict of the city) in September 1924, geologists discovered ore deposits with an iron content of over 50 percent at a depth of 116.3 meters. After some time, the Lebedinskoye field was discovered.
Worker Village
In September 1931, the first KMA exploration and development mine was laid, a small settlement appeared nearby, which in 1939, by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the RSFSR, was categorized as working village and named Gubkin in honor of Academician Ivan Mikhailovich Gubkin, who led the pool for 19 years. KMA. The day of the Decree's release (September 19) is considered to be the birthday of the city.
The Great Patriotic War prevented further industrial development of deposits. Purely peaceful people became soldiers. About 1900 people left the young workers' village for the front, and almost 16000 people joined the ranks of the defenders of the Motherland from the region, of whom 9685 did not return from the battlefields.
After the liberation, the village of Gubkin was a joyless picture. Almost to the base, all buildings were destroyed, the mine was flooded, and most industrial and mining equipment was rendered unusable. But the most valuable thing remains - people's faith in the speedy development of the wealth of KMA.
City
Large-scale development of the wealth of KMA began in the 50s of the last century. In May 1953, the KMAruda plant, the first enterprise in the region to extract and process iron ore, was created on the basis of the KMA mine and two factories. Its formation and development contributed to the fact that a young mining town grew up on the site of the workers' village, which by Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the RSFSR of December 23, 1955 was classified as a city of regional subordination.
An important stage in its development was the construction of the Lebedinsky mine, where iron ore was mined for the first time in the Soviet Union. Its construction was announced by the All-Union Komsomol construction, and over 5 thousand young men and women came to the young city on trips.
The city grew rapidly. March 7, 1960 by Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the RSFSR Gubkin became a city of regional subordination.
The rapid growth of mining production, a significant increase in the urban population led to the reorganization of agriculture, its concentration and specialization. In 1965, the Gubkinsky district was formed, in which, in subsequent years, a lot of work was done to build new agricultural complexes and processing enterprises.
70s - 80s became a qualitatively new stage in the development of the mining industry of the region.
In 1972, the first launch complex of the Lebedinsky mining and processing plant with a capacity of 7.5 million tons of ore per year was commissioned.
In 1978, the Lebedinsky mine, formerly part of the KMAruda plant, became a part of LGOK.
The most intensive development of the city took place in the last decades of the past century.
In the 80s, along with the ongoing construction in the city center, the construction of a new Zhuravliki microdistrict with full infrastructure was started.
As part of the Russian Federation
In the 90s, much attention was paid to the construction of social facilities in the city and the region. New schools, houses of culture, health care institutions are being commissioned, improvement of the city and rural settlements begins.
Today Gubkin is a beautiful modern city, one of the industrial centers of the Belgorod region with rich cultural and spiritual traditions, and developed infrastructure. It is the administrative center of the Gubkinsky urban district, with a population of 120 thousand people.
The basis of the economy of the territory is formed by the mining industry, construction organizations, enterprises of the processing industry and agricultural purposes.
The main volume of output falls on the extraction of iron ore.
The road construction program is being successfully implemented in the city and rural settlements, for the implementation of which a number of specialized enterprises were created, asphalt concrete plants were reconstructed, a large number of modern equipment, road equipment and special vehicles were purchased. An efficiently operating road construction industry is now capable of fulfilling the planned volumes of work without involving nonresident contractors.
The streets are being expanded to additional lanes with the replacement of road signs, markings, the construction of new bus stops, parking areas for vehicles. To streamline the placement of vehicles in domestic areas and create favorable conditions for pedestrians, road markings are applied not only on central city streets, but also in domestic areas.
In accordance with the rural water supply program, water wells, water towers, water supply networks, and iron removal stations are being built. To improve the sanitary-epidemiological state of the Gubkinsky territory and the environmental situation, a wastewater disinfection station with ultraviolet radiation was put into operation. Much attention is paid to the arrangement of springs and wells, in which the population takes an active part.
In order to improve the sanitary-epidemiological state of the Gubkinsky territory and the environmental situation, an ultraviolet wastewater disinfection station was put into operation. Active replacement of chlorination water disinfection stations with new, environmentally friendly Aquahlor and STELL installations is underway.
In the Gubkinsky urban district, all basic forms of social services to the population are operating. In accordance with federal and regional legislation, the provision of benefits and social guarantees for preferential and socially unprotected categories of citizens is organized. In order to improve the living conditions of the disabled, a social taxi was organized. All pensioners and beneficiaries were given the opportunity to use a single social travel ticket.
Support for family, motherhood and childhood is one of the priority areas in the work of local authorities. Targeted material assistance is provided to low-income families; events aimed at strengthening family traditions.
Every year, the network of medical institutions of the Gubkinsky urban district expands and improves. A branch of a children's clinic was built in the Zhuravliki microdistrict. After the reconstruction, the Gubkinskaya polyclinic equipped with modern equipment came into operation. In the renovated building, patients from the clinic in the Swan microdistrict receive patients. According to the wishes of the Gubkintsy, an Orthodox church in the name of St. Blessed Xenia of St. Petersburg was erected at a rapid pace - the new unit of the hospital - the department of spiritual and rehabilitation treatment.
The material and technical base and rural health are being strengthened. The existing hospitals and medical and obstetric centers are undergoing major repairs and are being built. Programs are being implemented in the territory aimed at improving medical care, disease prevention, and the protection of motherhood and childhood. The national project “Health” fills them with real content. Medical institutions are equipped with new diagnostic equipment and apparatus, which allows for the prevention, early detection and effective treatment of diseases, and additional medical examinations.
Gubkin is a large cultural and scientific center of the Belgorod region.
There are branches of the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys and the Belgorod University of Technology, the Mining Polytechnic and Music Colleges, two children's music schools and one art school. Fundamental in the work of educational institutions is the implementation of activities within the framework of the priority national project "Education". Their material and technical base is strengthened annually, and conditions are created for the high-quality organization of educational work. In 2007, the process of equipping all educational institutions with modern computer equipment, providing broadband access to the Internet was completed.
Institutions of additional education are successfully developing, in which more than 80% of urban and rural schoolchildren are involved.
In the activities of preschool educational institutions, special attention is paid to creating favorable conditions for solving educational, correctional, pedagogical, medical and health problems.
Gubkin land is rich in its cultural traditions, which are strengthened from year to year. In cultural and recreational institutions there are 271 amateur art groups.
Workers of culture and art make a significant contribution to preserving the cultural heritage of their small homeland, increasing its spiritual wealth, and developing folk art. Concerts, competitions, festivals, exhibitions have firmly entered the life of the Gubkintsy and have become its integral part.
Far beyond the boundaries of the region, the best Gubkin groups are known - laureates, diploma winners of international and national competitions and festivals.

In the open-air museum "Miner's Glory", a commemorative sign has been erected in honor of KMAstroy workers who did not return from the war fronts. On the eve of the 50th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, the only monument to the Widow and the Soldier's Mother was erected near the village of Bobrovy Dvory in memory of the Heroes of the Soviet Union and the full cavaliers of the Order of Glory: busts were installed in their homeland.
