Located in the central part of the country, on the border with the Dominican Republic . It is the only land-locked department of Haiti.
The area is 3487 km ², the population is 678 626 people (as of 2009 ). The administrative center is the city of Ensh .
Here is the lake Peligr , resulting from the construction of hydropower plants on the Artibonite River . This hydroelectric power station is the largest in the Caribbean .
