Dissemination and ecology
Euro-Caucasian appearance. It grows wild in North Africa , Anterior and Central Asia , Central and Southern Europe [4] , in Ukraine (mainly in Crimea), in Moldova and the Caucasus.
Biological description
Botanical illustration of Jacob Sturm from the book Deutschlands Flora in Abbildungen , 1796
A plant 30-130 cm high, similar to rezed yellow , but has 4 sepals. Flowers with greenish-yellow or light yellow petals appear in the second year.
Chemical Composition
The roots and leaves contain mustard essential oil ; in roots and grass - alkaloids rezedin and rezedinin; in seeds - fatty oil and glucobarbarin isothiocyanate; in the leaves - a derivative of flavon - the yellow pigment luteolin , as well as the blue pigment.
The coloring matter luteolin was first isolated by Chevrel in 1832, and later investigated by Schutzenberger.
Meaning and application
In folk medicine, infusions of roots and leaves were used as a diaphoretic , diuretic and anthelmintic . Glucobarbarin exhibits antithyroid activity.
Seed oil is suitable for paint and varnish production and medical purposes.
From the plant from the 1st century BC they receive yellow dye for silk and wool. For this purpose, it used to be widely cultivated in France, Germany, southern Russia and Armenia. By the end of the century, the use of yellowish rezeda for coloring sharply decreased due to the use of chemical dyes and due to the fact that the dyed cotton fabrics did not withstand soap.
