Early years
John Pertwie was born in London into a family of Huguenot descendants. The surname Pertwee is an aglification variant of the original French surname Pertweis de Laillevault [1] . His father Roland Pertwi was a theater writer and actor. Pertwie's mother, Avisa Scholz, left the family when he was a small child, so the future actor lived with his paternal grandmother, first in Surrey , then in London.
Pertwy studied at Miss Maxwell Junior School for Young Ladies and Gentlemen (London), Ardo School ( Eastbourne ), Wellington House (Westgate-on-Sea), in Frensham High School (Surrey), an independent school in Rowledge (near from Frensham, in Surrey) and Sherborne Public School (in Sherborne, northwest Dorset ). From among these schools he was expelled for bad behavior. After school, he went to the Royal Academy of Theatrical Arts, from which he was also expelled for refusing to play the same play the Greek wind and writing down the walls of the school toilet insulting teachers.
Career
Military career
Pertwee was an officer in the British Royal Navy and served there for six years during the Second World War . Since 1940 he was a member of the crew of the battleship of His Majesty "Hood". Pertwi was transferred from Hud shortly before the ship accepted the final battle with the German battleship Bismarck. In the navy, he was given a snake tattoo, which was sometimes noticeable when he played in Doctor Who . In an interview, he admitted that he found her on his arm one morning after a drunken night. During the service he visited the Soviet Union as part of the Atlantic convoy.
In 1941, John Pertwie was promoted to officer and recruited by naval intelligence. Working as a senior agent with Jan Fleming , known in the future as the author of spy novels about James Bond , Pertwey reported directly to British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Deputy Prime Minister Clement Attlee .
Starting an acting career
After the war, he made a comedian career, playing the role of an unhappy postman in the radio production of the Post Air Force. For 18 years he played in the popular radio sitcom The Navy Lark , dedicated to the navy of Great Britain. He made his debut on the stage in 1963 in the play “A Funny Story That Happened on the Way to the Forum”, and in 1966 he got a role in the film version of this performance. Pertwee brought the first popularity role in a series of comedy films "Keep It Up!", In which he starred during the years 1964-1992.
Doctor Who
In 1969, John Pertwee was selected as the Third Doctor in the Doctor Who series. Pertwie was pleasantly surprised when he learned about his new role. Before playing the Doctor, Pertvi was not very interested in the show, because his image didn’t coincide a bit with the images of the previous two Doctors. Unlike William Hartnell and Patrick Trouton , Pertwee played the active, inclined to action of the Doctor in fashionable clothes. He played the Doctor for five seasons from 1970 to 1974. At the beginning of 1974, Pertwee announced that he was finishing his role as Doctor. His departure was associated with the tragic death of his friend, Roger Delgado, who played the role of his sworn enemy of the Master in the series. He last played the Doctor in June 1974 in the Planet of the Spiders series. Later he returned to the role of Doctor in the anniversary issues of " Five Doctors " and " Measurements in Time ."
Other Roles
Another well-known Pertvie role is the revived Vorzel's scarecrow in the children's television series Vorzel Gummidzh of the ITV channel based on the books of writer Barbara Y. Todd, starring at the beginning in the UK from 1979 to 1981, and then in New Zealand in 1987-1989 under the title “ Vorzel Gummidzh: At the end of the world. The show immediately became a hit and is now known as a classic of British children's television. His partners on the show were Una Stubbs and Jeffrey Baildon . Last Pertwi returned to the role of Gummidge in 1995 in a special episode dedicated to the fortieth anniversary of the ITV channel. Pertwie also played this character on stage and recorded an album for the musical Worzel Gummidge Sings , the single The Worzel Song , songs for social advertising and a cover of the song When I'm 64 by The Beatles , performed in a voice scare.
In 1971, during a break between filming Doctor Who, he played in the horror film House where Blood Flows , parodying the “eternal” Dracula of the Hammer studio, Christopher Lee .
Pertwi recorded many songs for children and participated in the creation of social children's advertising about the rules of the road called The Green Cross Code , also known as SPLINK . In the 1970s and 1980s, he was leading a detective television show Whodunni .
He also participated in a variety of talk shows. At the end of 1995, he received a cameo in an amateur story about the adventures of the Third Doctor by the beginning of the seventh season of the series. This video has never been released on VHS or DVD , but it became an Easter egg on the War Games disc. Pertwee's latest appearance on the screen was a role in the Cilla's Surprise Surprise , which was released on April 21, 1996.
John Pertwy has two autobiographies: Moon Boots and Dinner Suits and I am The Doctor, the first of which reviews his life and his career before Doctor Who, and the second after him.
Until the last day of his life, John Pertwie was doing voice acting. Pertwee died only a few days before the British premiere of the full-length Doctor Who tape, so the film came out in the UK with a dedication to John Pertwee.
Personal life
Pertwi was married twice. For the first time at Jean Marsh , their marriage lasted from 1955 to 1960. The second time - to Ingeborg Ross. He became engaged to her in 1960. Together they lived until his death, they have two children - Sean and Deriel.
The actor played guitar, was fond of water skiing and loved fast cars and motorcycles. On his Honda VT500E, he traveled up to 74 years.
Died on May 20, 1996 in Connecticut . According to his last will, he was cremated.
