Appearance
Wingspan of about 70 mm. Females are much larger than males.
The main background of the wings is black. On the upper surface there are blue-green stripes, which, depending on the angle of view and lighting, shimmer with a yellowish-reddish tint. The underside of the wings is bright, bluish-cobalt in color with a wavy pattern. On the hind wings there are peculiar “ponytails” with white fringe [1] .
The color and shape of the wings of Alcides agathyrsus is similar to those of the sympatric butterfly sailing Papilio laglaizei (Müller mimicry ) [2] . Both species are inedible. Butterflies of both species often fly together over the crowns of trees, and there are more sailboats than uraniums) [2] .
Range
Widely distributed in New Guinea and northern Australia .
