He studied the history of Latin America and the history of Europe, mainly France of the XVI — XVIII centuries. He experienced a serious influence of the school of the "Annals" , in particular, Fernand Braudel .
He is one of the pioneers of quantitative history in French science. One of the most important areas of his research was to study the effect of demographic fluctuations on the development of civilizations.
Adhered to conservative views, since 1944 was a supporter of the policy of Charles de Gaulle. In 1954 he moved to Protestantism . Not once found himself in conflict with his colleagues. In 1968, he advocated reforms, understanding them differently than most of his university entourage. At the same time he protested against abortion, guided by moral and religious considerations and fearing a demographic crisis.
