The exact origin of Ermengarda has not been established, however, a number of historians suggest that she could be the daughter of Count Ampuryas Gosbert . Ermengard was first mentioned on August 16, 967 as the wife of Oliba Cabreta. On this day, the count and his wife gave a donation charter to the monastery of Santa Maria de Ripoll , which contained the request of the donors, addressed to the Virgin Mary , to send them children. The document testifies that by this time the marriage of Ermengarda and Oliba was still childless, but later Ermengarda became the mother of four sons and one daughter.
As the wife of Count Oliba Ermengard, she was repeatedly mentioned in the charters given by her devout spouse to various churches and monasteries in Catalonia. Ermengard herself was the founder of the monastery of Santa Maria de Castocha. In 988, Count Olib Cabreta abdicated and went to Montecassino Monastery, where he died in 990 . Before his abdication, Oliba divided his possessions among his sons not yet of age: Bernardo I Tagliaferro received the county of Besalu, Bethred II - the county of Cerdan, and Oliba - the county of Berg . The regent with her children and the ruler of all these counties was Ermengard.
The most significant event of the regency of Ermengarda was its conflict in 991 with Bishop Urhel Salla . It is known from historical sources that, under the patronage of Ermengard, persons close to her in Cerdany and Berg seized several churches belonging to the Urchel diocese and ceased paying tithes to the episcopal treasury. In response to these actions, Salla assembled a local cathedral in Seo de Urgel , which was attended by a large number of Urhel prelates, as well as Bishop of Barcelona Vives and Bishop of Roda Aymerik. The council decided to excommunicate the closest advisers to Ermengarda, Radulfo and Arnau from the church , but not to extend the excommunication to the countess herself and her family members. Also, the cathedral imposed a ban on the conduct of services in all the churches of Cerdany and Bergi until all the seized property of the Urchel diocese was returned to her. Nothing is known about how this conflict was resolved due to a lack of documents, but historians note the fact that until his death in 1010, Bishop Salla only once attended a ceremony attended by any of the Count's family members. Cerdani and Besalu, while under Olib Cabret, Salla’s ties with the count family were very close [3] .
The Ermengarda Regency ended in the second half of 993 or in 994 , after which almost nothing is known about it. The donation charter given to her by the convent of Santa Maria de Serrathes , probably on January 2, 995, has been preserved. [4] Ermengard is mentioned in several documents as the owner of Valespira , who may have been transferred to her by Count Oliba Cabreta after their wedding. In one of the medieval martyrology, the death of Ermengard Ampuryassky dated 1013.
