In the play
Stanley is a descendant of Polish immigrants , he himself was born in the United States . He lives in the French Quarter of New Orleans with his pregnant wife Stella (nee Dubois) and sells auto parts. As a representative of the proletariat , Stanley is proud that Stella left his rich family for his sake. Kowalski has a heavy character, they often quarrel with his wife, and in the course of these quarrels Stanley allows himself assault.
With the appearance in the home of Sister Stella Blanche Dubois , an antagonistic relationship arises between her and Stanley. Aristocrat Blanche allows herself to openly look at Stanley from top to bottom, showing him that he is not worthy of Stella; she calls him a “monkey” and often scornfully recalls his Polish origin, which offends Stanley, who considers himself an American . His dislike of Blanche is even greater when she begins an affair with a friend, Stanley Mitch, and when she allows herself to intervene in a family quarrel.
From a friend who knew Blanche in her past life, Stanley learns that she came to New Orleans because she was left home. Dubois's family mansion, Kowalski finds out, was sold for debts; there are rumors about Blanche herself in her sisters' hometown about numerous love stories with her participation that began after the suicide of her husband. Stanley tells Mitch about this, as a result of which he breaks relations with Blanche.
On the night that Stella gives birth to their first child with Stanley, he returns home drunk and meets Blanche there, too, drunk and raving about her happy past. He starts rudely pestering her and gets a rebuff; then furious Stanley rapes her. This robs Blanche of the last vestiges of her self-esteem and leads to the brink of a nervous breakdown ; a few weeks later, at the insistence of Stanley, she was placed in a mental hospital.
