Story

Takashi Natsume is a Japanese student, a high school student with unusual abilities. He is able to see the other world: youkai (demons), spirits, ghosts, kami, and other supernatural beings. Since childhood, this ability was hated by him, because of it, others considered him “strange”, preferring to stay at a distance from a child who can either talk with emptiness or stare with horror at an empty place.

Natsume, who lost his parents as a child, settles in the house of the Fujiwara family, in the same area where his grandmother Reiko, who was also a confessor, had long lived. And then the surrounding demons begin to regularly attack Natsume, and he has to escape in a Shinto shrine. The demons take Natsume for his grandmother (they have a bad sense of time and gender discrimination) and demand that they give them the Notebook of Friendship.

With the help of a youkai Madara accidentally freed from imprisonment, who looks like a fat cat, Natsume understands what is happening: it turns out that Reiko’s grandmother fought many demons in her youth, defeated them and made up the “Notebook of Friendship” from sheets on which the vanquished wrote their own names. Enclosing the names of the demons in a notebook, she made the demons themselves their servants. Now the one who takes possession of the notebook will become the master of many demons and spirits. The notebook was preserved in a chest with grandmother's things. Madara demands to give the notebook to him, but Natsume decides in his own way: he is not going to either give power over the demons to one of them, or use this power himself, and just wants to return their names to the demons. To do this, asks Nyanko-sensei (which is exactly what Takashi calls his companion) to share demonic power, promising the demon that he can take a notebook when Natsume dies. An unexpected decision becomes the beginning of a new life: the farther, the more Takashi communicates with the supernatural and the more he realizes that there is no insurmountable gap between people and demons.

Characters

Takashi Natsume ( Japanese 夏 目 貴志 Natsume Takashi ) is a high school student, of medium height, thin, fair-haired, with amber eyes (in the manga Midorikawa draws him with a platinum blonde (gray-haired) with green eyes), for which he often got from classmates. Has the ability to see spirits (ayakashi, youkai). As a child, he tried to tell others about what he saw, but eventually became convinced that he was still not believed and was considered either “strange” or a liar, and ceased to mention his abilities. For this reason, closed and unsociable. After the death of his parents, Natsume moved from one relative to another, but never took root. Just before the start of the series and the manga, the childless couple of Fujiwara sheltered him, and, as was later noted, the adoption initiative came from the side of the Fujiwara couple. At the same time, he began to get along with classmates, in general, life began to improve. In order not to shock relatives and friends, he especially carefully hides his abilities from them. Takashi is very kind and caring, at the beginning of the story he refuses to help the spirits in every way so that there are no problems, but later he becomes convinced that this is useless. Later he climbs himself to help, not listening to Madara's sensible indignation. Although he does not like ghosts and demons, with time and among them he makes friends. Only with ayakashi is he really frank, but with people, Natsume keeps his distance. He seeks not to harm anyone or problems, he is not seduced by the power over demons that the Notebook gives. Having learned to return the demons their names, with every such action he learns some episodes from the past, from the life of the young grandmother Reiko and the creatures with whom she spoke, and this teaches him to never draw hasty conclusions about people, demons and the reasons for their behavior. Over time, he shows the ability to see the past of those with whom he met. Basically, this is the moment or reason for the appearance of any problem that one who came to Natsume for help faced. Athletic, runs fast, since the ayakashi who want to get a Notebook of friends often chase after him. The manga notes that he goes to the kendo club, but wants to drop it, because the form is expensive. Afraid to be a burden to others. Very worried about Notebook, because responsible.

Seiyu : Hiroshi Kamiya

Madara ( 斑 斑 ) - Youkai, one of the few who refused to fight Reiko, was accidentally released by Natsume from imprisonment in a Shinto shrine where the guy was hiding from the haunting ghosts. The true appearance is okami , a giant white wolf with a long fluffy tail, capable of flying, a very strong demon. But usually he prefers to take the form of a maneki-neko , a fat, clumsy cat, because over the years of imprisonment in the statue he got used to this form. In this guise, all people see him. It also knows how to take a human appearance (prefers to transform into a girl similar to Reiko), but uses it only occasionally when you need to communicate with people who do not know about spirits. Lazy, but at the same time curious, at times bears complete nonsense (in which there is still logic and meaning, though very deeply), but only if this does not apply to spirits, Notebooks and the life of others. Clumsy, likes to mock others (Natsume sometimes beats him for this). He pretends to be a burnt cynic, constantly reminds that he stayed with Natsume only in order not to miss the Notebook, he threatens to eat it at an opportunity. Constantly criticizes Natsume for excessive kindness and gullibility, swears with him when he calls him a "cat", claims that Natsume is his servant. Often fights with Natsume, especially in the second and subsequent seasons. In reality, he is simply afraid to become attached to people, because their life, by the standards of demons, is too short. With Natsume, he simply kills time, although he becomes attached to him slowly (and does not recognize it in any way), constantly helps him, often saving him in hassles with demons that Takashi himself cannot do. Loves to eat, abuses sake . It can turn into people who are "well considered." So in one of the episodes of the 4th season reincarnates in Natsume Takashi.

Seiyu : Kazuhiko Inoue

Reiko Natsume ( 夏 目 レ イ コ Natsume Reiko ) - the main character's grandmother is Takashi, the creator of the Friendship Notebook. In the anime and manga, we see Reiko in the memories of the demons who were defeated by her. Madara spoke of her as "an incredibly beautiful person, but lonely and unsociable." The reason for her loneliness was the same as that of Takashi - the ability to see spirits. Reiko also tried to be frank with people and told them about her gift, but no one believed her. Therefore, in the city where she lived, among her peers, she was considered crazy, but even Natsume does not always understand the logic of her actions. She was often told, even in person, that she was a “werewolf fox”. The brutality of classmates taught her to defend herself, but Reiko used brute force only against demons who, losing to her in battle, gave their names. So the Notebook of Friendship was created. Died young.

Seiyu : Sanae Kobayashi

Kaname Tanuma ( 田 沼 要 Tanuma Kaname ) - Tanuma arrived in the village almost immediately after Natsume. At first he looks alienated and unfriendly, but in reality he is a kind guy and always tries to help. His father is a rector in a Shinto temple and prays a lot. In one of the episodes, it is noted that Tanuma’s father possesses the power of Buddha and is able to cleanse spirits from the area, which worries them very much, since he does not know either his strengths or measures. Tanuma, on the other hand, can sense the presence of strong spirits and see their shadows, but cannot see them or manifestations of their vital functions (traces, for example). He, like Natsume, had problems communicating with people, since he is strange to others, although not as much as Natsume, which is why communication with friends is new to him. He tries to help Natsume with the spirits, but because of his weak abilities, he worries that he is of little use and that he often suffers from youkai auras.

Seiyu : Kazuma Horie

Suitei Natori ( 名 取 周 Natori Suite ) - Natori is another person who has been able to see spirits since childhood. He is a very famous actor, but also an exorcist. From birth, he has a mole "lizard", which moves throughout his body, but for no known reason, never crawls on his right leg. Constantly lying to everyone around. Even Natsume. Natori hates spirits. As a child, he did not see anything bad in spirits, he helped and even made friends with them, but all his relatives said that he brings misfortune. Natori saw the guilt of spirits in this and became an exorcist. Uses perfume for work, but treats them quite gently. However, other spirits are quite cruel, which Natsume does not approve of. After they became friends, Natori became a little softer in relation to the spirits and began to worry about Natsume.

Seiyu : Akira Ishida

Tooru Taki ( Jap. 多軌 То Taki Tooru ) is a quiet woman who did not communicate with anyone. As it turned out later, because of the curse that the youkai placed on her. Natsume helped her remove this curse, thanks to which they became friends, and Taki, as it turned out, was a terrible talker! She cannot see spirits, but is a native of the side branch of the ommyoji family, thanks to which she knows several spells and how to draw a magic circle that enhances the spiritual strength of anyone standing in it, which makes even a very weak ayakashi visible to people. He loves soft, fluffy and cute things, which is why Gyako-sensei constantly squeezes.

Seiyu : Sato Rina

Seiji Matoba ( 的 的 静 司 Matoba Seiji ) is the head of the Matoba clan. An exorcist who sacrifices innocent spirits to achieve his goals. Despite the fact that he destroys spirits for the sake of protecting people, he does not hesitate to harm any spirit in his path. He does not touch people. At least physically. Most often appears armed with a bow and arrow, which he uses to eliminate the youkai. Many generations ago, his ancestor signed a contract with a strong youkai, promising in return to give his eye, but did not fulfill his part of the deal. Because of this, all his descendants, including Seiji, wear a blindfold on their eyes with a spell that makes this eye imperceptible for that youkai. During his first meeting with Natsume, Seiji says his eye is already damaged. After the first meeting with Natsume, he shows great interest in him, and later asks him to join the Matoba clan.
