East Carolina University ( ECU ) is an American state university located in Greenville , North Carolina . It is the largest university in the eastern part of the state and the 3rd largest in North Carolina. The university has 27 391 students (2008). The University was established by the General Assembly of North Carolina on March 8, 1907 as a teacher development school, which it decided to open on July 2, 1908 in Greenville. Training began in 1909. The East Carolina University received its modern name in 1967. Historically, the most developed areas are education, nursing , business, music, theater and medicine. The university has 3 campuses: the main campus is located in the historic center of Greenville, the medical campus is located on the western outskirts of the city, the western research campus, built on the former territory of the Voice of America station. In addition, the university has a sports complex (an American football team - East Carolina Pirates) and a field station in New Holland (North Carolina). The total territory of the university is 567 ha.
