Shrubs , shrubs, and annual or perennial grasses with erect or creeping stems. Height from 6 to 150 cm. Petiolate or sessile, stem or in a basal rosette. Petiole of leaf shorter than plate, leaf margin ridge or dentate. Inflorescence is a type of dichasia , they are located on the tops of the stems or in the axils of the leaves. Flowers are sessile or on a peduncle. Five -membered cup . Corolla is either a short, two-lip funnel-shaped white or lilac, or a long, tubular red or yellow. The flowers of the first type are pollinated by bees , and the second by birds . Androecium consists of four stamens, two of them are short, and two are long. The fruit is a box (from 3 to 30 mm). Seeds are small, round, cubic or irregular in shape. Seed diameter from 0.2 to 1 mm. The number of seeds in one box is up to 68 pieces ^{[3] [4] [2]} . Species Staurogyne repens is a promising aquarium plant ^[5] .

The genus includes more than 140 species ^{[4] [2]} , of which about 30 species in Central and South America, 5 species in West Africa and 110 species of Southeast Asia . In mountainous areas it is found up to an altitude of 2000 m above sea level ^[3] . Phylogenetically related genera are Anisosepalum and Saintpauliopsis , found in Africa ^[2] .
