Biography
Ike Turner was born on November 5, 1931 in Clarksdale , Mississippi , USA . At the age of ten he got a job at a radio station, where he became interested in the music of the 1940s . Ike's favorite performers were Elmore James , Charlie Booker , Sonny Boy Williamson , Howlin Woolf , Little Walter and Muddy Waters . In the wake of his interest, he creates a school group “R & B”, which, however, has not received fame.
In 1950, Ike Turner asked to accompany Sonny Boy Williamson on musical tours. At the same time, Payntop Perkins turned his attention to him and showed him the basis of the boogie style . Having mastered the piano , Ike Turner assembles the ensemble "The Kings of Rhythm" . Recorded in 1951 , the song “ Rocket 88 ” is acknowledged by many critics to be first in the rock-and-roll style .
In 1956, Annie May Balok joined the group, who later became the lead vocalist of the group and Hayk's wife, better known under the pseudonym " Tina Turner ". The ensemble The Kings of Rhythm was transformed into the family duet Ike & Tina Turner revue , which received great commercial success. During the collaboration, Ike and Tina recorded about 20 albums, releasing such hits as “River Deep - Mountain High”, “Proud Mary”, “Nutbush City Limits”, “I Want to Take You Higher”, “I Idolize You” , “Poor Fool”, “Tra La La La La”, “A Fool in Love”, “It's Gonna Work out Fine”, etc.
In 1976 there was a rupture of a creative duet, and in 1978 Tina and Ike divorced. The musician took up a solo career, but the songs recorded by him did not receive the previous recognition. He started using drugs, he had problems with the police, and Ike ended up in jail.
When he was released, Ike tried to quit with drugs and again engaged in music. He revived the band The Kings of Rhythm and in 2001 released the album Here and Now, which was nominated for a Grammy Award . His next album, “Risin with the Blues”, was released on September 12, 2006 , and was again nominated for “Grammy” in the category “Traditional Blues Album” - the award was presented in 2007 .
December 12, 2007 musician died. Experts have announced an overdose of drugs as the official version of his death.
