Biography
In 1963 he graduated from the Albanian branch of the philological university of the A. A. Zhdanov Leningrad State University [1] .
From 1966 to 1970 he worked as a researcher at the Leningrad Branch of the Institute of Linguistics of the USSR Academy of Sciences . From 1970 to 1985, he was a junior researcher, then a senior researcher at the Institute of Linguistics of the USSR Academy of Sciences . In 1978 he defended his thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philology [1] . From 1985 to 1987 - scientific secretary, and from 1987 to 1993 - deputy academician-secretary of the Department of Literature and Language of the USSR Academy of Sciences for scientific and organizational work [1] .
In 1992-1995 - Director, and since 1995 - Deputy Director of the Institute of Languages of the Peoples of Russia [1] .
At the same time, from 1982 to 1991, he was a professor at the Department of Germanic Languages at the Military Institute of the USSR Ministry of Defense , and from 1991 to 2006, he was a professor and head of the Department of Literature Theory of Moscow State Linguistic University [1] .
Since 1994 - academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences .
Awards and Prizes
- Order of Friendship ( 2000 ) - for services to the state, many years of conscientious work and a great contribution to strengthening friendship and cooperation between peoples [2]
- Laureate of the State Prize of Russia for the “Linguistic Encyclopedic Dictionary” ( 1995 ).
- Honorary title "Honored Scientist of the RSFSR".
Community Activities
From 1986 he was a member of the board of the Soviet Cultural Foundation , from 1991 to 1994 - first deputy chairman of the board of this fund (succeeded by George Myasnikov ). Created under the Culture Fund created the Council on toponymy [1] .
