Wonderful bird of paradise

The miraculous bird of paradise [1] ( lat. Lophorina superba ) is a species of passerine birds from the family of birds of paradise ( Paradisaeidae ), which is distinguished into the monotypic genus of wonderful birds of paradise ( Lophorina ). A wonderful bird of paradise lives in the mountains [2] of Western New Guinea ( Indonesia ) and Papua New Guinea [3] , at an altitude of not lower than 2000 meters above sea level [2] . Body length - 23 cm [4] . An adult bird weighs 85 grams [4] . The plumage of the male is velvety black, the female purple-brown [2] .

Subspecies

The species is divided into five subspecies [5] :

  • Lophorina superba niedda - distributed on the peninsula ( English Wandammen peninsula ) (north-west of New Guinea) [5] ;
  • Lophorina superba feminina - distributed from the Weyland Mountains ( Eng. Weyland Mountains [6] ) to the east in the central part of New Guinea [5] ;
  • Lophorina superba latipennis - distributed in the east and northeast of New Guinea, and also lives in the Adelbert Mountains ( English Adelbert Mountains ) and in the mountains on the Huen Peninsula [5] ;
  • Lophorina superba minor - lives in the mountains in southeast New Guinea [5] ;
  • Lophorina superba superba - distributed on the Chandrawashi Peninsula (northwest of New Guinea) [5] .
