The original castle (founded by Edward the Confessor ) was expanded several times in the XII century - first to accommodate Queen Matilda and her retinue, then at the direction of Henry II . The building belonged to the type of fortifications common at that time - Plessey . In 1380, Heinrich Bolingbroke played a wedding with Maria de Bohun in Arundel.

From the time of Richard the Lionheart the castle was owned by the descendants of William d'Aubigny and Adelyse of Louvain After the extinction of the Aubigny clan, the castle (along with the title of Count Arundel) passed through the female line to Fitzalan . In 1580, the Fitsalanovs were inherited by the current owners, the Howards. The owners of the castle more than once appear on the pages of Shakespeare's historical chronicles.

Arundel Castle suffered great damage during the civil wars of the XVII century . With the return of fashion to medieval architecture, the 11th Duke of Norfolk at the turn of the XVIII and XIX centuries. renewed his neo- gothic chambers. The construction continued to be reconstructed in the Victorian period , especially in connection with the visit of Queen Victoria with her spouse in 1846.
