Biography
Daughter of the King of Belgium Leopold II and his wife Maria Henrietta of Habsburg-Lorraine . Her childhood was overshadowed by the strife of her parents and the death of her only brother, the heir to the throne of Leopold . Stefania was friendly with her younger sister Clementina .
First Marriage
On May 10, 1881, in Vienna, Stefania married Rudolph, crown prince of Austria . This marriage was made for political reasons. The ceremony was attended by the future king of Great Britain Edward VII and his nephew, the future German emperor Wilhelm II . Their only child, Elizabeth Maria, was born in Laxenburg Castle on September 2, 1883 .
Stephanie gladly fulfilled all the duties imposed on her by status and thereby earned the approval of Emperor Franz Joseph . Soon, the spouses had disagreements. Rudolph was notable for impulsiveness, held unconventional and liberal views, and Stephanie - reactionary. When Rudolph infected her with a venereal disease, which made her pregnancy impossible, they even considered divorce.
Stefania tried in vain to draw the attention of her husband's parents to his depressive and even suicidal moods. In 1889, Rudolph and his mistress, seventeen-year-old Baroness Maria Vechera probably committed a joint suicide. Stefania became a widow at the age of 24. The scandal that erupted in connection with the death of Rudolph further removed it from the imperial court.
Second Marriage
While still married, during a visit to Galicia in 1887 , Stefania met with the Hungarian Count Elemer Lonyai . They married in Miramar ( Italy ) on March 22, 1900 , which caused her father's indignation. After his death in 1909, together with her sister Louise, she defended in Belgian court her rights to the inheritance, which Leopold II invested in her own commercial organization.
In 1917, Lonyay received the title of Fürst from the emperor. Stefania moved into the possession of her husband Oroswar-Rusovce in western Hungary. They had to leave from there with the advance of the Red Army in 1945 . They took refuge in the Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalm . In the same year, the princess died of a stroke and was buried in the crypt of the abbey.
Legacy
In 1935, Stephanie wanted to publish her memoirs, but the court forbade their distribution. These memoirs were eventually published outside of Austria under the name Ich sollte Kaiserin werden ( “I Should Be the Empress” ).
In honor of the princess are named:
