History
Martin County was formed in 1925 from the southern part of St. Lucie County and the northern part of Palm Beach County . It was named after John Martin, governor of Florida from 1925 to 1929 .
Geography
The county is located in the east of central state. Borders on counties: St. Lucy (in the north), Palm Beach (in the south) and Okeechobee (in the northwest). In the east it is washed by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean; in the west - by the waters of Lake Okeechobee .
Population
According to the 2000 census, the district's population is 126,731 people. Racial composition: white - 89.88%; African-Americans - 5.27%; Asians - 0.6%; Native Americans - 0.3%; Oceanians - 0.1%; other races - 2.72%; representatives of two or more races - 1.14%. Age structure: up to 18 years: 18.6%; from 18 to 24 years: 5.3%; 25 to 44 years old: 22.9% 45 to 64 years old: 24.9% over 64 years - 28.2%. The average age of the population is 47 years. For every 100 females there are 96.4 males.
