History
Marion County was formed in 1844 from parts of Alachua , Mosquito ( Orange ) and Hillsborough counties . Until 1853, it included most of the territory of Lake and Sumter counties. The county is named after the hero of the Revolutionary War, General Francis Marion of South Carolina .
