History
Manati District was formed in 1855. It was named after the manatee inhabitant of the coastal waters.
Geography
The county is located in the western part of the state. It borders on counties: Hillsboro (in the north), Polk (in the northeast), Hardy (in the east), De Soto (in the southeast) and Sarasota (in the south). In the west it is washed by the waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
Population
According to the 2000 census, the county population is 264,002 people. Racial composition: White - 86.36%; African Americans - 8.19%; Asians - 0.9%; Native Americans - 0.28%; Oceanic - 0.05%; other races - 2.84%; representatives of two or more races - 1.39%. Age structure: up to 18 years: 20.7%; 18 to 24 years old: 6.5%; from 25 to 44 years: 24.6%; 45 to 64 years old: 23.3%; over 64 years old - 24.9%. The average age of the population is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 93.5 males.
