Biography
Born in 1530 in Kanev in the family of the Bratslav gentry coat of arms Dolenga .
According to legend, he spent twenty-five years in captivity among the Turks chained to galleys . After escaping from captivity, he headed the Cossacks, was a ataman, then hetman. In 1602, killed during the war with the Swedes [2]
Being elected hetman , Samoilo obtained from the Polish king Sigismund III Vasa the abolition of banicia (the law recognizing the Cossacks as illegal), which led to the restoration of the Cossacks as a public estate. In 1600, he led the Cossacks in the Cossack-Polish campaign in the Crimean Khanate. In 1601 - 1602 , the Cat at the head of the 4 thousandth Cossack detachment participated in the Polish-Swedish war in Livonia. In 1601, Vitebsk was captured by his troops, many citizens were killed and robbed [3] .
There is no reliable data on the further activities of the Cats and circumstances of death. Some researchers believe that the Cat died on February 28, 1602 during the Infland War in a battle near Fellin (near the city of Poltsamaau in Livonia) and was transported and buried in Kanev. Instead of Samoilo Cats, the Cossacks elected Gabrielo Krutnevich as the new hetman.
According to another version, the hetman Cat still took part in the Battle of Tsetsorsky in 1620 , died in 1620 and was buried in Kanev , as evidenced by his coffin, located in this city [4] . But, it should be borne in mind that in the latter case, the Cat should have been about 90 years old.
