D b (locomotive)

D b ( d B locomotive factory locomotive ; factory designation - 0-6-6-0 1000/1 DE ) - a series of diesel locomotives supplied by North American Baldwin plant to the railways of the Soviet Union during World War II under Lend-Lease . Despite the same letter of the series with the diesel locomotive Da , had practically nothing in common with it, and, according to many reputable designers [ what? ] , he should have given the designation of the series by another letter.

Design

Unlike D a, which had a bonnet-type body, in a diesel locomotive D b, the driver’s cab was located at the end of a semi-streamlined body, which allowed to significantly improve track visibility, but required a locomotive to be turned at the end stations. The main frame of the locomotive was a very complex casting, which however was convenient for installing various equipment (including diesel, automatic couplers and buffers). Three-axle bogies were also integral, and the wheelsets were all-rolled (bandless) and had a rolling surface diameter of 1067 mm (25 ” ). The weak point of these diesel locomotives was diesel, which was characterized by low strength of structural elements.

The fate of diesel locomotives

In total, 30 locomotives were delivered to the Soviet Union, received the numbers 71-100 (USATC: 2460-2489) and assigned to the Gudermes depot and Sukhumi depot . Of these locomotives delivered to the Union in 1946, from 1953 to 1960. five diesel locomotives were excluded from the inventory, most of the remaining diesel locomotives were excluded in the 1960s [1] . The last surviving diesel locomotive D b -76 was disposed of in the winter of 1981/1982. in Likhobory, it did not belong to the depot, but to the Institute of the Way [2] . None of these machines ever entered museums. At the moment, it is only known about the partially preserved D b (the driver’s cab in the form of a booth , a cast frame, on whole cast trolleys ), the rear quarter of the cut-off body on the territory of the Reshetnikovo PMS of the Oktyabrskaya Railway may have been preserved.
