Biography

Little is known about the youth of Izumi-shikibu: her father, Masamune Oe, was governor, her mother was a maid of honor of the Empress at the court of Emperor Reizei (950-1011). The true name of the poetess is unknown. At around the age of twenty, Izumi married Tachibana Mishisada, who later became governor of Izumi province; from their union, the daughter of Cosikibu was born, who later became a poet, like her mother. Soon, Izumi left for the capital to look after the sick empress; relations between her and Tachibana quickly deteriorated, and as a result, the husband and wife broke up. The poetess was in a romantic relationship with Prince Tametaka, the son of the emperor, but he soon became mortally ill and died. She later had an affair with Atsumichi, Tametaka's younger brother, but he soon passed away too. All this is described in detail in the Izumi-Shikibu-Nikki Diary (Izumi-Shikibu Diary). Then the poetess entered the service of Empress Shoshi . The last husband of the writer was Fujiwara Yasumasa, who died in 1036 . The further fate of Izumi-shikibu is unknown.

Izumi-Shikibu is among the " thirty-six greatest poets " of the Japanese Middle Ages. Her creative heritage includes, in particular, the Izumi-Shikibu-shu home anthology, the already mentioned Izumi-Shikibu-Nikki diary, and many (about 1,500) tanka poems.
