Ampqua

Ampqua indian. Artist Alfred Thomas Eget

Ampqua , Umpqua, is the name of several distinct groups of Northwest Pacific Indians living in the south-central Oregon state.

The tribe of the Upper Ampqua is part of the Kau Creek Group of Ampqua Indians. The tribe was the first of the Oregon Indian tribes to sign a federal treaty with the US government on September 19, 1853 . The Kau Krik tribe had previously spoken the takelma language, now extinct. The Cow Creek tribe lives on a reservation near the modern city of Roseburg in Oregon, owns a casino and the Seven Feathers Hotel in Canyonville.

The Lower Ampqua tribe is currently one of the three tribes in the Confederation of Kus, Lower Ampqua and Sayuslo tribes in southwestern Oregon . Their language is close to Sayusulo .

Some small Amqqua bands are part of the Oregon Grand Rond Confederation of Tribes.
