Born on September 11, 1803, son of the commander of the Pereyaslav equestrian regiment of colonels, Colonel Evstafy Smithten. He received his home education and after passing the exam in the Corps of Pages in 1822, he was released by an ensign in the 2nd Marine Regiment .
In the ranks of this regiment, Smithten, being a captain, in 1831 took part in the suppression of the Polish uprising , fought under Grokhov , Hendrzheev and Racyzhe. On December 25, 1831, for distinction in the storming of the Warsaw suburb of Prague, Smithten was awarded the Order of St. Georgy 4th degree (No. 4637 according to the list of Grigorovich - Stepanov).
Following the abolition of the 2nd Marine Regiment in 1833, Smithten was promoted to colonel and continued to serve in the Sofia Regiment . He commanded the Grenadiers Regiment of His Majesty the King of Prussia , on September 8, 1843, received the rank of major general . On January 10, 1844, he was appointed commander of the 2nd Brigade of the 1st Grenadier Division , but on April 17 of the same year he was exchanged places with the commander of the 1st Brigade of the 2nd Grenadier Division, Major General N. N. Skobeltsyn .
He died in Porkhov on February 20, 1846 and was excluded from the lists by the deceased Highest Order of March 1, 1846.
His sons: Peter (official of the Committee of Ministers) and Eustathius (served in the Life Guard rifle battalion of His Majesty's battalion , was adjutant to the governor-general of Eastern Siberia).
