Geography
The geology of the lake and its surroundings is the result of a meteorite impact that occurred 370 million years ago. The resulting impact crater filled with time with young sedimentary rocks , primarily limestone . Today's lake and surroundings arose during the ice age as a result of the repeated spread of glaciers . Moreover, the glaciers more strongly changed the crater itself due to light erosion of the rocks filling it than the surrounding area.
There are many islands on the lake, of which the largest is Solleroen (7.5 km long, 4 km wide). On the shores of the lake are settlements Leksand , Mura and Rattvik . At the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, there was a busy movement on steam boats in Silyan. Today, pleasure boats ply the lake. Traditionally, in the end of June - beginning of July, there are competitions in rowing on church boats on the lake (traditional boats for Sunday church attendance).
