History
The first issue of the newspaper Politički vjesnik (from the hor. - “Political Bulletin”) was published in Zagreb on June 24, 1940 . During its preparation, a spelling mistake was made in the name: “vijesnik” instead of “vjesnik”. In the second issue, the error was fixed. In early 1941, the publication was renamed “Vjesnik radnog naroda” (from the hor . - “Bulletin of the working people”).
Since the summer of 1941 , after the occupation of Croatia by Nazi Germany , and the creation of a pro-fascist state on its territory, now the “Vjesnik Hrvatske jedinstvene nacionalno-oslobodilačke fronte” (from the Croatian - “Bulletin of the Croatian United National Liberation Front”) has become the main source of information about actions of partisans . The August 1941 issue began with the title “Smrt fašizmu - sloboda narodu!” (With the hor . “Death to fascism - freedom of the people!”), Which later became the official slogan of the whole partisan movement , often used in post-war Yugoslavia .
In the fall of 1941, the editorial office settled in the liberated Kordun, in 1942 moved to Dreznitsa, and since 1943 - to Kapela. From this moment, “Herald” begins to appear weekly. In January 1945, the editors moved again - this time to Split .
On May 11, 1945, the issue of the now daily Vestnik newspaper was published in Zagreb . Under this name, it is published today. Then, in May 1945, the need arose for the first time to appoint a chief editor. They became Sheriff Shekhovich.
In the sixties, the editors of the Bulletin began to issue a digest for the week, “Vjesnik u srijedu” (from the hor . - “Herald on Wednesday”). Then the magazine for men “Start” began to be published (from the hor. - “Start”), the model for which was “ Playboy ”. In the seventies, the circulation of "Herald" reached 100,000. [2]
In the early nineties , after Croatia proclaimed independence from the SFRY , Vestnik came under the control of the new ruling party - the Croatian Democratic Commonwealth . In an attempt to distance itself from the communist past of the newspaper, the word “Novi” was added to its name in 1992 (from the hor. - “New”). The name, however, did not become popular with regular readers, and in the same year, "New Herald" was again renamed "Herald."
In the 2000s, there was a sharp decrease in newspaper circulation : from 100,000 in the seventies it fell to 21,348 in 1997 and to 9,600 in 2005 .
In 2012, the publication of the newspaper Vjesnik was discontinued.
